How do Disney films contribute to the construction of society's values and norms about gender roles?

Term Paper Instructions:

Movie I will talk about: Beaty and the Beast 2017
Thesis: Disney fairytale films construct and reflect social views about gender through the representation of the princess and villain characters. New version of Beauty and the Beast, the first princess movie written by a woman, represents both characters with modern perceptions about acceptable and unacceptable of women and men. Belle is an independent woman with agency to make her own decisions, and she is willing to fight for the life she strives. Different from other women in the village, Belle is bookish and educated. She pursues the marriage with a man who have warm heart and good conduct instead of high social standard. Gaston is an illustration of traits labelled by the APA as “toxic masculinity.” Gaston judges women based on their appearance, uses violence to get what he wants, and shows the personality and vanity and arrogance.

The New version of Beauty and the Beast, the first princess movie written by a woman, represents both characters with modern perceptions about acceptable and unacceptable of women and men. Belle is an independent woman with the agency to make her own decisions, and she is willing to fight for the life she strives for. Different from other women in the village, Belle is bookish and educated. She pursues the marriage with a man who has a warm heart and good conduct instead of a high social standard. Gaston is an illustration of traits labeled by the APA as "toxic masculinity." Salam points out that the idea of toxic masculinity reflects the set of behaviors that influence men not to show their emotions and to appear tough all the time and show any signs of being feminine. Toxic masculinity is associated with traditional masculine norms and expectations that may also hinder men from exploring what it means to be a man feminine. Social constructs of gender roles are meaning, are connotations in a society that reflect people's understanding of these roles and internalization of expectations (Sharp and Wade).  Belle is different from other Disney princesses because she is independent and bookish. She is the only girl who likes to read in the small village, which her special unique. While Belle's representation is a departure from the typical representation in Disney films, there are still few examples of positive female representations and boundary-breaking roles. Society is stuck in old ways and thinking, but Belle is not a damsel in distress waiting to be rescued, and she turns down an opportunity to get close to Gaston, who is rich and handsome. In typical Disney films, princesses are rescued by handsome princes or handsome young men and live happily ever after. Haas and Trapedo "7-8) write "at the same time creates a frame around the story--the film ends with "happily ever after" and the closing of the book" Belle lacks interest in Gaston for he is uneducated and cannot read. As such, Belle breaks social norms, and her independence makes her stand out. Heroines are sentimental compassionate and wait for their fate rather than shape their own destiny, while the men are confident, strong, and helped the ladies in distress from their situations and were lauded for their heroic fetes.
Belle does is not content with staying in the small village and is open to try new challenges rather than wait. This shows that she does not wait for others to shape her destiny, and she saves herself from danger. At the 18:3 marks in the lyrics that Belle sings, "I want adventure in the great wide somewhere, I want it more than I can tell". Belle further challenges con...
