the introduction with a thesis statement and mapping statement

II. Major Body Paragraphs [papers have multiple paragraphs]: Here, each of the points in the
mapping statement are used as topic sentences. The topic sentences serve as the first sentence of a new
paragraph and point of analysis that supports your thesis. Each of your body paragraphs will have at least
one quotation from your required readings to illustrate the author’s actual point of view and to support the
claims you make about their essay.

III. “So What?”: As a final argument, you will make one last point about the broader importance of the

claims with quotes from the reading.
IV. Conclusion: Provide a brief synopsis of your paper’s main arguments and conclude by paraphrasing
your thesis and any additional final points you wish to make. [For a quick conclusion, copy and paste your
thesis, each of your (3) topic sentences/subclaims, and the main point of your “So What?” onto a
document. Format those sentences as if they form a small paragraph. Rewrite the paragraph in your own
words again. Copy and paste that re-written paragraph at the end of your paper as your Conclusion. Read
and edit just to make sure it reads well with the rest of your paper.]
V. Bibliography of readings quoted and paraphrased or referenced should be the last page of your
paper.

The Morongo Band of Mission Indians

Introduction

The Morongo Bands of Mission Indians are among the federally recognized Indian Tribes who live in Californian reserves. Since the bands of Morongo Indians mostly hunted and gathered before the arrival of Europeans they were less organized that many other Native Americans as they lived a more nomadic lifestyle. The creation and expansion of the US resulted in the displacement of the indigenous peoples in North America including dispossession of their lands. Native Americans were considered domestic dependent nations since the 1830s where American law was not applicable in their territories, and granted them sovereignty. The Morongo Nations are threatened by laws that affect their land claims and even as gaming has grown, exercising full territorial sovereignty remains a challenge as the legacy of settler colonialism influenced laws and policies, while oral traditions and networks help to strengthen the community, and cultural bonds.
