Summary of the events
Franklin Roosevelt in 1932 joined the White House during difficult times of the Great Depression. He promised the American people a New Deal. The set of legislative reforms which came to be termed as the New Deal completely transformed economy and politics of the United States (Brinkley 35). Shortly after assuming power, Roosevelt told American people that the New Deal initiative would focus on achieving reforms, recovery and relief, popularly known as “3Rs”. President Roosevelt then began government programs to give shelter and food to the needy. These were some of the New Deal programs. Apart from that, the CCC (Civil Conservation Corps) gave Americans jobs which protected the natural environment. TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) gave people jobs of constructing dams in the Tennessee River. Such dams produced hydroelectricity for rural places. The dams also helped to prevent floods. WPA (the Works Progress Administration) gave people jobs of constructing schools, libraries, parks, and streets. Many Americans by 1939 still did not have jobs, although the economy was progressively improving. Since Roosevelt became president, the federal government played a bigger part of contributing better lives of Americans.

When the Great Depression started, Herbert Hoover was the one who was serving as the U.S president. Hoover believed that the economy would restore and get better by itself. Brinkley opines that the economy got worse and many Americans were losing jobs and homes (43). People wanted the government to intervene. Congress enacted laws which loaned finance to railroads and banks, though these laws never improved the entire economy. Roosevelt became president in 1933, and he considered the federal government to assist to end the Depression, and eventually initiated the New Deal programs to restore the country.

The New Deal program assisted all Americans and created job opportunities to millions of citizens. Several New Deal programs are still continuing even in the present time. The Social Security Act offers money to individuals who are above 65 years old or people with disabilities (Brinkley 48). The New Deal created regulations to prevent depression from occurring again. Federal banks regulations protected saving accounts of people. The other regulation helped to protect workers by creating a national minimum wage.
