Religion is a critical aspect of the human social life. All religions offer different teachings that influence how we behave as well as our beliefs. Despite all the differences that exist among the religions, one of the major themes that stand out to unite the various faiths is the perception of the afterlife (Huxley, 2006). The view of the afterlife is compelling because human beings are immortal and most religions teach that they have a spirit that comes from a divine place and will eventually return there after death (Sorensen, 2005). The afterlife is essential in religion because it is an aspect that makes people keep their faith. Fundamentally, the orientation that what people do earth affects their afterlife is what keeps them attached to deeds taught by their religion. Researchers suggest that even the traditional spiritual practices acknowledged that there is life after death (Palmer, 2011). It is a promise offered by religious movements, which gives the followers hope.
Different regions have the same orientation in some teachings about the afterlife while some aspects show significant differences. According to the Hindus, the soul goes through a cycle of successive lives and the incarnation is determined by how one lives in the present life. Jains believe in Karma, where the good continues in the cycle of rebirth while the bad suffer in eight hells. The teachings of Confucius suggest that the afterlife is beyond human understanding and that people should not live with the perspective there are rewards or punishment. Nevertheless, there is a belief that one goes on to live as an ancestor spirit that relates to the family after death. Likewise, the Shinto believes that one becomes ancestral kami.
