Cultural competence refers to knowledge skills on cultural beliefs and attitudes, allowing health workers to work with people from diverse backgrounds in the cross-cultural settings (California Department of Education, 2016). On the contrary, cultural sensitivity refers to knowledge on cultural similarities and differences, but without assigning values on them. Cultural competence integrates quality improvement in provision of services by identifying disparities. People also improve their knowledge and skills to improve the provision of culturally competent services with interventions tailored to the needs of the targeted communities.
Acculturation is the process where an individual or group of people takes values, cultural practices and beliefs from another culture (Yoost, & Crawford, 2015). Assimilation is the process of embracing and adopting some features of another culture, voluntarily or by force. Ethnocentrism is the belief that one’s culture to those from different cultural backgrounds, ethnicity and racial group. Transcultural nursing is an approach that focuses on identifying cultural differences, health beliefs and health behavior to provide culturally competent care.
Leininger proposed the culture care theory and proposed cultural care preservation, cultural care, accommodation and Cultural care restructuring to influence care decisions and acts. Cultural care preservation/ maintenance relate to the professional actions or decisions that facilitate and help people to retain, preserve as well as maintain care beliefs. Cultural care accommodation/ negotiation refer to the acts/ decisions that facilitate and enable the providers to help the cultures to adapt and negotiate for culturally congruent and sensitive care to improve health and well-being (Leininger, 2002).
