Joint Planning in Military: Center of Gravity and Justification

Term Paper Instructions:

Tasking: Using the background information below, complete the following tasks, and submit them to your instructor in a single document.
• Identify the operational-level Center of Gravity (COG) for Caprica. Justify your selection, and then conduct a critical factor analysis (CFA) for the COG you identify. Provide from your critical factor analysis a minimum of one critical capability, two critical requirements, and two critical vulnerabilities, as well as your justification for the derivation of these factors for each COG (450-550 Words).
• Develop and describe one Course of Action (COA) that is distinguishable from both the two COAs provided in the Staff Estimate (150-250 words).
• Conduct a doctrinal validity test on the COA you developed and describe your results (400-450 words). Remember the ultimate goal of a COA validity is to determine whether COAs are appropriate for presentation to CCDR.
• Using the five evaluation criteria provided in paragraph 3 of the Staff Estimate of the Situation, conduct a COA Comparison between the COA you developed and any one of the given COAs. You may use any format you choose (including the sample decision matrix found earlier in this lesson). Explain your methodology and your results (450-550 words).

Joint Planning – Military
Center of Gravity and Justification
Caprica-controlled Andalusia is the center of gravity (COG) for joint military planning. Asgard’s military should consider this as the COG to neutralize Caprica’s influence in the Andalusia region and thus safeguard its territorial integrity. The purpose would be to create regional stability by putting Asgard-controlled Andalusia (ACA) under Asgard’s control and offering humanitarian relief and initial support to international organizations to achieve sustainable development (CCDR USPEGCOM, 2021b). Caprica-controlled Andalusia is the COG at the strategic level because it has populations and leaders determined to prevail. At the tactical and operational, Caprica-controlled Andalusia would attract specific military forces, including Tartarus, that unofficially pledged their support to Caprica concerning their recent territorial conflict with Asgard (CCDR USPEGCOM, 2021a).
Critical Capability
From the given scenarios, Caprica has various critical capabilities (CC) that could jeopardize Asgard’s military operation success. The Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) within the Pegasus region are of great concern to the military operation. Caprica is likely to use SCUD missiles, although it remains unclear whether they would limit such actions to conventional strikes. One of the critical capabilities is that Caprica also maintains an active WMD development program. It could leverage WMD in the context where their military power is disadvantaged. In addition, Tartarus might assist protect Caprica from military aggression, mainly participating in offensive operations to pursue its national strategic goals in the Pegasus region (CCDR USPEGCOM, 2021a). These factors are justified as major CCs for Caprica could leverage them to achieve success at strategic, tactical, and operational levels.
Critical Requirement 1
Support from Tartarus, China, and Russia is a critical requirement to achieve the critical capabilities mentioned above. With a constant supply of arms and military training from these allies, Caprica would achieve the critical capability to capture critical airports as well as strategic positions in Asgard and thus force them to negotiate for peace (ACSC/DLC, 2021).
Critical Requirement 2
Popular support for military action is necessary to win any military engagement. Caprica’s military offensive against Asgard would achieve legitimacy thresholds based on the need to protect ethnic brethren in the ACA region. The jingoistic Caprican media has instilled a solid anti-Asgardian feeling amongst most Capricans in recent years (ACSC/DLC, 2021).
Critical Vulnerability 1
Caprica is grappling with obsolete production units as well as working practices. Caprica’s high inflation rate undermines its global commerce and trade. Lack of economic capabilities undermines their ability to withstand constant attacks from Asgard and the United States (U.S.) forces (ACSC/DLC, 2021).
Critical Vulnerability 2
Caprica likely has an unfavorable global opinion stemming from its involvement ...
