What duties and responsibilities did each caste have?
The essential duties and responsibilities of the Brahmin caste included but were not limited to offering sacrifice for himself and others, teaching, learning, and receiving gifts from pure men. The Kshatriya caste was responsible for protecting the entire world’s creatures, conveying punishment per the prescribed kingdom laws, and fighting for the people. Vaisya caste assisted in appraising and establishing the value of metals, perfumes, and cloth during trading activities. Vaisya caste was also responsible for tending the cattle. The Sudra caste was responsible for serving the elite (brahmins). They were expected to demonstrate humility in their interactions and service to people of higher caste (Buhler, 1896).
