Formation of the committee for the future of nursing was mainly aimed at coming up with recommendations that would help in reforming the health care system. The committee was headed by Robert Wood Johnson. It conducted investigations on the workforce capacity for the nurses (William, 2007). There were several recommendations developed by the committee to show how the services of nurses in environments with shortages would be delivered. The committee also recommended for changes in nursing education in order for nurses to take up more roles in health services.
The committee discussed the need for policy changes at different levels in the field of nursing to attract many people into nursing. Solutions on how the shortage of nurses in American health care was developed showing the need for an increment of institutions that offered nursing education. The committee also identified the roles and responsibilities that nurses should perform in health care so as to deliver reliable services to the public. The committee recommended for expansion of the faculty that dealt with nurses by adding the number of training centres for nurses. It also recommended the redesigning nursing education so as to generate adequate nurses who are in a position to meet future demands in the health care system (McClellan, 2008). The committee’s report showed that attraction and retention of nurses would be possible if there were use of different settings in health care. Innovative solutions were to be examined in relation to service delivery.
Importance of the report to IOM
The Report made by the committee for the future of nursing is of great importance to IOM since it address crucial areas in nursing. It also gives some recommendations that will impact greatly on nursing thus enhancing efficiency. The recommendations in the report will help American health care system to meet the future demand. Due to increasing levels of complexity in the health care system, the report would help IOM to make several advancements in their education program. They would also increase the capacity of nursing students to cope with the problem of the shortage in future. It is through recommendations in the report that the IOM will produce nurses who are well trained and potentially able in health care. ANA recommended the report due to its acknowledgement on nurses taking their leadership roles at all levels to meet changing demands in American health care.
The report offers many opportunities and at the same time challenges the IOM to develop strategies that will enable them to meet future demands in the field of nursing. Implementation of the report by IOM will enhance training of adequate nurses who are competent in their work. The report also enables the IOM to make changes in their education in order to develop education that will equip the nurses with confidence and knowledge in the field of nursing.
