Stem Cell Research: To be or Not To Be?
The Human Stem Cell research is, apparently, a very important medical advancement in fighting off cell-damaging and generative diseases. This paper asserts that this assumption is still hypothetical since the study in strengthening this technology is under the inquiry of both religious sectors and moralists.
Stem cells are described as cells that have the capacity to differentiate into other forms of cells. In other words, stem cells could give rise to other forms of cells such as skin cells and nerve cells. The differentiation of a stem cell can “…occur spontaneously or through a process called direct differentiation [wherein] the cells are allowed to contact each other, or when certain growth factors are added to the medium” (Panno, 2005). Stem cells are classified into three (3) types based on their origin. These are the (a) adult stem cells, (b) induced pluripotent stem cells, and (c) embryonic stem cells (Robinson, 2010).
The adult stem cells are known to come from the bone marrow or the peripheral system. Bone marrow has been found to contain a high number of stem cells however, in retrieving these stem cells the patient would usually undergo a painful and bone marrow-damaging procedure. In the case of the peripheral system, extracting stem cells would not be affecting the bone marrow but the procedure for will take a long time especially since the stem cell that is to be extracted would be from the patient himself. The induced pluripotent stem cell is the latest of the three types. These stem cells are described as ordinary cells that had been treated with chemicals to act like embryonic stem cells. This form of stem cell, although acting similarly as the embryonic stem cells, are more accepted by moralists and religious sectors since they pose fewer threats to their moral views. The final one is the embryonic stem cell. These stem cells are from human embryos and in collecting them, the embyos in turn, die. This has been the subject of most ethical and moral issues that religious sectors and moralists debate against. Their stand is that taking embryonic stem cells for medical purposes causes the abortion of the embryo. Since they consider abortion as a form of murder, then the issue of the human stem cell research arises. (Robinson, 2010; Popular Issues.org, 2011)
Many scientists believe that the human stem cell research would be an effective technology in solving some of the deadliest cell-damaging diseases as well as generative diseases present in man. In Badge’s (2001) article, he wrote that stem cells "have already been used in therapies, and others are effectively being used in trials, including fetal midbrain cells for Parkinn’s disease, and pancreatic duct cells for diabetes.” In Dr. Weissman’s (2005) paper he wrote that stem cells are effective tools for regenerative curing wherein...
