Ladies and gentlemen:
Did you know that smoking kills more people than AIDS, murder, illegal and legal drugs, road accidents, and suicide combined? These are facts documented on the May 18, 2021, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids campaign website. Smoking is either through regular cigarettes or E-cigarettes. I will talk about them later. E-cigarettes are popular among teenagers compared to traditional cigarettes. They are electronic devices that heat a liquid to produce an aerosol. E-cigarettes contain nicotine which is an addictive substance forming the basis of their harmfulness. Apart from addiction, substances in E-cigarettes are harmful to the heart, lungs, and brain and create a smoking generation instead of acting as an alternative for people to quit smoking.
E-cigarettes contain nicotine which is addictive, and once a person starts to smoke it, they may never stop it. Michael Joseph Blaha, a Professor of Medicine and Director of Clinical Research, Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease in John Hopkins hospitals, says that nicotine is more addictive than heroin and cocaine. Some of the E-cigarettes sold have more nicotine than is recommended to attract and maintain customers. In the long run, people consuming the product find it hard to stop using it due to addiction to high doses of nicotine. It is the reason most users complain of headaches when they go for long without using it. Addiction is harmful because the nicotine and other substances contained in E-cigarettes may cause diseases and organ failures.
The most affected organs are often the lungs and the heart. E-cigarette smokers inhale aerosols which, according to an article published in November 2020 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), contains nicotine, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabinoid (CBD) oils, and other substances, flavorings, and additives made of chemicals which alter the healthy functioning of a person’s body. According to Dr. Blaha, the most common diseases are lung cancer and asthma, which are caused by particles deposited in the lungs leading to deaths.
