Why Social Networking Sites Do More Harm Than Good
Social networking sites are online social spaces. Users create a profile that depicts their social links. This profile enables them to share connections with other users with profiles on the same website. The youth and teenagers are the most interested parties in social networking sites. Examples of these sites include Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, Tumblr, and Chat rooms. However popular these sites are, they do more harm than good. My speech aims at highlighting the negativities that come with these sites.
The rapidly increasing rate of cyber harassment crime owes its existence to social networking sites. People have reported cases where one has been harassed on Facebook and other social networks (Trotter, 2006). These cases happen since one of the profile requirements is that a one's photograph be uploaded. In addition to this, one's personal information is up for viewing by anyone who is interested. For that matter, some youth is carried away to the extent that they willingly upload truthful personal information that should remain like that, personal. Some have gone to the extent of displaying details of where they live, or where they school. It is a recipe for disaster as cyber bullies are on the prowl (Krebs, 2008).
When equipped with such personal information, they easily target these innocent youth. In some instances, these youth have been attacked and raped or even murdered by these cyber bullies. In other cases, cyber bullies simply post degrading things about other people (Miller, Thompson, & Franz, 2009). Stories and photos that often go viral are examples of cyber bullying. The affected parties suffer emotional pain. Their reputation is damaged beyond repair as their personal life is displayed on social sites. In that case, I urge all social site users to be wary of the information they display on their profiles. Not all people on the internet have the same course as ours. Some personal information is not worth displaying if there is a possibility that it may haunt us in future.
Young adolescents spend most of their time on these social sites. Now more than ever, these sites have become more of necessities to them than common sources of entertainment. Not an hour goes by before one log into Snapchat. Thanks to technological advancements, one does not need to go to a cyber café that may be far away from home so as to send emails or to access Facebook. A smartphone is the only necessity for adolescents to access these sites at the touch of a button. In that case, most of their time is spent on internet socialization (Miller, Thompson, & Franz, 2009).
Adolescents do not realize that they are not the only people on these sites. People with various agenda also enjoy the privileges of being in these places. Internet predators normally befriend such individuals in these sites. They ensure that they have as many friends as possible. Most of them create fake profiles with the intention of attracting unsuspecting adolescents. In some cases, men have used female photos to create their profiles. They have then targeted young boys, trapped them, and molested them...
