Luton Street Lighting
Good evening ladies and gentlemen. I would like to take this chance to welcome you all to this ground breaking event in our beloved Luton society, orchestrated for the continuity of the society.I call it ground breaking because, it is the first community meeting that has been held in light of the interests of the residents of the great community that not just peace loving but also bound by social justice. My name is Dayton Webb a member of the society and one of the founders of this association.
I would like to take this chance to welcome you again to the first summit of the community association as we look forwards to taking charge of the calm in Luton in years past. Before we start I would like ask the audience; would you like you and your loved ones to live in a safe environment?
When, my grandfather first moved to Luton in the 60s, it was the calmest town in Bedfordshire. It offered a solace place for those that wanted to be away from the hustle associated with London. They went about their daily activities without the need to worry about who wanted attack them on the streets or in their homes. It was a calm town and most of the residents knew most of their neighbors (Ebusinessconsultant.co.uk, 2015). Today most of the people do not have an idea about who their neighbors are or even what they do for a living. People have become more secretive in their lives and the neighborhoods have been turned into secret havens (Nikkah, 2004).
Crime reports have been on the rise, some of which are rarely reported. For most of us we can only hope that the police will get to us in time or that we have the means to protect ourselves.Walking on the streets is no longer an activity that most of us would want to undertake and it is more dreadful if our teenagers and youngsters are out or playing in the yard after dusk. Anyone that is walking on the streets after dusk has to constantly look over their shoulders and hope that they are not being followed. What is more is the fact that, the criminals have become blunt enough to attack as in our homes.
Sex predators, violent robberies, illegal arms, daylight robberies and stalkers have found a soft ground in Luton, where they hide and attack with vehement vile. Crime, drugs and violence are a menace. These are elements that would make one run out of their skin. For most of the local security officials, reporting these crimes and giving information on any suspected persons is the way to go (Nikkah, 2004). The only problem that poses a great challenge is the fact that, most of the street lights are not operational. As such, most of the residents’ cannot see their attackers as they hide in the dark that the faulty street lights provide. A number of the attacks that have been reported in the town have been closely related to the fact that the area was poorly lit when the victims were attacked.
In light of the latest predicaments, the community members are encouraged to take a firm step towards the eradication of these crimes through consolidated efforts by all the community members. Security is an aspect that affects all the community members. When one or a few of the community members are involved in an attack, we all feel vulnerable to the devices of the attacker. It is in the human nature to picture oneself in the shoes of the victims. There is thus nothing wrong with feeling afraid that the attackers may target you or a member of your family. What is wrong, is keeping quiet about attackers that are terrorizing the neighborhood, destroying property and endangering lives. What is left for us all is to take action against the perpetrators of these heinous acts and protect our lives and property from activities that are bound to bring this community down if not checked (Luton.gov.uk, 2015).
