Overview

This purpose of this assignment is to help you start thinking about your research project more concretely, with greater breadth, depth, and specificity. The goal is to produce a short document that gives your reader a good sense of your intentions for the research process and final research paper.

 

In general, a research proposal should provide a concise and coherent overview of your proposed research. It needs to identify your general topic and its importance, as well as provide well-crafted research questions that you hope to answer. A typical research proposal will actually require more components than this assignment does, and in most cases would be much longer, hence the term “Preliminary” in the title of this assignment.

 

Content

When writing this proposal, you should think of yourself as engaging with your research project. Consequently, the Pearlmann-Carillo framework gives a good overall overview for your proposal; below is a guide to the  kind of content your proposal should have corresponding to each component. Note, though, that you are not obligated to put these components in exactly the given order, and you might want to weave some components together. Furthermore, you are not obligated to answer all of the questions listed for each component, and you are welcome to answer different questions.

 

Analysis –     What is the background context within which you will be conducting your research? What important assumptions will you be making? What, more specifically, is your topic? Why is any of this important and worth thinking about? Why is it interesting?

Question –    What are your main research questions? (Don’t give more than two.) What motivates your questions? Why are they important?

Evaluate –     Why are these questions reasonable ways to get at your topic? In what way do they focus attention on important issues? What kind of research would be useful for answering these? What kinds of sources would you need (e.g. empirical studies, discussion of theory) and from what fields?

Complicate – What further subtleties should be taken into account? Are there additional questions that you expect to come up and will need to be answered? Do your main questions have aspects that will require special treatment?

Conclude –    What do you hope to learn from doing the research, beyond just finding answers to your questions?

  • This should be a multi-paragraph essay, containing no bulleted lists, and not just listing answers to questions. The whole thing, from sentences, to paragraphs, to the full essay, should be clear and concise, cohesive and coherent, with well chosen transitions. Furthermore it should have a brief introduction and a brief conclusion.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the preliminary research proposal on the history of infinity and beyond. The paper provides the basis for my research plan. Besides, the paper details a discussion of the history of infinity and beyond. The research's main aim is to understand the origin of various perceptions underlying the history of infinity and beyond, more specifically, the impact of infinity. The proposal outlines the proposed research topic, assumptions, key research questions, methodologies of conducting the research, and expectations.
The idea of infinity is always interpreted in multiple ways within society (Batchelor 4). Mathematical perceptions of infinity portray the concept as an imaginary maximum number. However, philosophers and theologians consider infinity as the representation of God and eternity (Seppänen 272). Historically, some tribes thought numbers greater than three to be uncountable and hence infinite (Batchelor 3). Greeks primarily influenced the study of the concept of infinity. Moreover, the Greeks significantly pioneered various mathematical processes. The Greeks believed that based on the history of infinity, it is essential to establish its impact on culture and sociology. Similarly, research on the history of infinity and beyond, therefore, informs the study of the connections between infinity, social aspects, and cultures. However, the research will be based on several assumptions. For instance, the research assumes that most discoveries on infinity were established in the 17th century. Another assumption is that the concept of infinity is progressively evolving. The topic of the research is a cultural and sociological study of the history of infinity and beyond. Moreover, the topic is essential to understand the origin of disputes that exists in perceptions of the concept of infinity. The research is interesting since it enhances our understanding of diverse concepts of infinity.
My main questions for the proposal include why does Ancient Greek society abhorrence the notion of infinity, and why is the 17th century the most critical period for the study of infinity? What happened, and who were the thought leaders? The questions are motivated by the need to determine the origin of infinity based on cultural and sociological perspectives. The research on this question is essential since they provide insight into infinity that helps construct an individual's knowledge on the process of cultural and sociological modification of the idea of infinity.
