What are the Chinese government’s attitudes toward gender equality, and how it reflects in real life?
Overview of the Literature
A detailed analysis of existing literature on the Chinese government’s attitudes towards gender equality reveals diverse standpoints and approaches for evaluating the Chinese government’s efforts in promoting inclusivity across gender divides. Gender imbalance also makes for one of the social parameters against which some studies seek to determine the Chinese government’s attitudes towards gender equality (Shuzhuo, 2013).
Most of the gender equality in China focuses more on the workplace, mainly taking two forms; unequal pay and unequal employment probability. The measure of the attitude of the Chinese government toward gender equality focuses more on how the government has put measures to reduce the gender gap. Research indicates that the gender wage gap has increased since the economic reforms (Li, 2011). According to Zhang & Huang (2020), before the economic reforms of 1978, China had only a modest gender gap in the labor market. In the Maoist regime, the economic system did not provide room for much inequality. As a result, all men and women were primarily treated the same in the workplace. Over the years, however, the gender gap in the Chinese labor force has risen, while that of other countries like the US has been declining.
While Chinese law prohibits gender discrimination in the hiring process. It envisages a workplace where both men and women can participate equally. The Chinese government claims to be committed to gender equality in various aspects, including education and employment (Stauffer, 2018). The government continues to proclaim its commitment to gender equality in the nation by advocating for equal rights between men and women in the workplace. However, despite such claims, research demonstrates that the gender wage gap has widened significantly from 2002 to 2007, and the gap is more pronounced for low-wage groups (Shi, Jin and Xiaochuan, 2011).
Based on the literature review of the highlighted articles, it suffices to claim that there lacks a holistic approach to evaluating the Chinese government’s attitudes toward gender equality. Such a holistic approach would feature a detailed analysis and evaluation of the diverse gender interactions across the Chinese social, political, and economic domains for a conclusive assessment of the Chinese government’s attitudes towards gender equality and how it reflects in real life. The holistic approach would provide an excellent platform for developing and providing a definitive assessment of the Chinese government’s attitude towards the social issue.
Contribution of Dissertation
