The COVID-19 pandemic and other outbreaks have highlighted the critical issues in preparing nurses to respond to outbreaks. When emerging infectious diseases rapidly spread, nurses face immense strains as frontline providers in close contact with affected patients. Nurses on clinical rotations struggle with challenges like inadequate personal protective equipment (PPE), mentally draining workloads, poor communication hierarchies, and lack of guidance around ethically difficult decision-making. I have chosen to focus on this topic due to alarming statistics around nurse hazards, distress and resignation rates amid recent infectious disease outbreaks such as covid 19. My perspective as a nurse trainee observing these dynamics lends an important angle in translating research into pragmatic solutions for an already overburdened profession. Most critically, advocating for improvements in nursing pandemic readiness exemplifies long-overdue prioritization of frontline personnel who sacrifice their well-being when diseases inevitably and unexpectedly surge. The paper critically evaluates the history of nursing issues regarding pandemic preparedness, the population affected by current nursing issues, how it affects the nursing profession and likely outcomes and solutions to this current nursing issue regarding pandemic preparedness.
