Sustainability is the human pursuit to create and maintain resource bases to ensure the average quality of life is present for future generations. This essay is a report that analyzes the complexity of the issues that both developed and developing societies faced.
The report is based in Newark, New Jersey, where there is increasing concern about the high levels of lead drinking water. The residents are frustrated by this and the unsuccessful attempts to solve the situation without litigationCITATION Nat21 \l 1033 (NRDC). In 2016, the city had its first significant warning signs after record high lead levels were spotted in Newark schools' drinking water.
There is no lead exposure level that is considered safe. Lead is a very dangerous potent neurotoxin that has devastating effects, primarily on infants and children. In 2017, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) pushed Newark's city to monitor the presence of lead in deinking water extensively. Long-term neglect of the water system was the cause of the inevitable high levels of lead that were above the federal action level. Therefore, it is understandable why in June 2018, the Newark Education Workers (NEW) Caucus and NRDC filed a citizen suit against the City of Newark and New Jersey state CITATION Nat21 \l 1033 (NRDC). Newark's teachers and residents sought no money from the lawsuit, just solutions to secure safe drinking water.
By the time action was taken, Newark levels had risen the highest of any major city in the country. By January 2021, the city was already underway in removing over 18,000 lead service lines.
