What nutritional deficiencies do you anticipate for this patient? Explain in detail which factors have contributed to that/those deficiency(ies).
The patient is exhibiting symptoms of Thiamin, or vitamin B1 deficiency. Beriberi is a disease resulting from a lack of Vitamin B1 or thiamin. The patient has been consuming no solid food for several months, leading to lack of essential nutrients for his body. He also has a high alcohol intake from his consumption of beer and whiskey.
How is the status in that/those micronutrients relates with the ability of cells to produce energy?
Thiamin is an essential nutrient that help keep tissue function at optimal levels. The biologically active form of thiamin is thiamine pyrophosphate which acts as a coenzyme in the metabolism of carbohydrates. The thiamin pyrophosphate acts to decarboxylate alpha ketoacids. Thiamin also plays a role in the formation of glucose in the body by assisting the transketolase in the pentose monophosphate pathway (Wiley, 2021). Thiamin is not locally produced in the body which is why there is a need to consume food that contains it.
