Analogical Versus Case-Based Reasoning
Humans often consider certain aspects before making a decision or concluding on a particular issue. The reasoning could be analogical or case-based. Analogical reasoning refers to a specific way of thinking anchored on the idea that because two or more things are similar somehow, they are probably similar in some other further respect (Thibaut & French, 2016). For instance, life can be likened to a chocolate box because you never know what you will get. When buying a chocolate box, you are never sure of what is inside it. Life is precisely the same; you never know what is there for you in the next minute, day, week, month, or year. On the other hand, case-based reasoning involves solving a current problem basing on past similar cases (Richter & Weber, 2016). Basing on the past cases, Al Qaeda, AQ is likely to become more dangerous to the US homeland security than Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, HTS.
Al Qaeda has had a rich past in terrorism activities that have proved stubborn even after the US killed their leader Osama Bin Laden in 2011. The terrorism group has proved resourceful in strategizing attacks globally. The US intelligence is among the best in the world but has received a hard time detecting terrorist activities from the group, as seen by the rate of attacks globally. Ten years after its formation in 1988, AQ attacked the US embassy in Kenya and Tanzania, East African countries, killing several people. The same trend repeated three years later with the AQ taking the US doorstep attack and killing at least 3000 people in the twin tower bomb attack ("Al-Qaeda," n.d.). These few instances proved the competence of the AQ.
Several other attacks followed later in the 2002 Bali bombing, the 2003 Saudi Arabia bombings, the 2004 Madrid bombing, and the 2005 London bombing. The AQ group also claimed responsibility for several other failed operations, including the 2009 Christmas Day plane bombing attempt, the 2010 Times Square bombing attempt, and the 2010 cargo plane bombing attempt ("Al-Qaeda," n.d.).
