Should Term Limits Be Instituted for Members of Congress?
Term limits can be defined as legal restrictions which do limit the number/ period of terms which an office bearer/ holder serves. For quite some time now, the debate on whether the term limits should be instituted for the members of the Congress in the united states has been on the lips and minds of many American citizens, with everyone involved in the debate/ talk trying to get clearly the reasons why and why not the term limits should be instituted (Epstein & Walker 168). This paper aims to find out, the reasons for and against the introduction of the terms limits after which it can contribute to a proper decision making regarding the talking point/ debate of term limits.
The politicians in the Congress in the United States are not subject to the terms limits, of the twenty-second amendment ratification of 1951. They can be elected as many times as they wish, so long as the electorates do elect them over and over again (Herrnson 122). There are many reasons why the term limits ought to be introduced to the United States Congress. To begin with, term limits will help to bring fresh ideas to the table. Whenever and wherever the very same people get to be elected again and again, it means that the same debates occur again and again. The high retainment levels/ re-election of the Congressmen is a major contributing factor to the state of ideas in the united states politics, especially those to do with the Congress. The election of new members, through the act of the term limits, will help to bring a new perspective which in turn will provide different kinds of influences and ultimately it will provide a huge inspiration of change that can benefit society as a whole. New senators and representatives would bring on board more to the discussions and more fruitful and fresh solutions to the various challenges can be found (Wilson 099).
Secondly, the term limits will be an encouragement to the electorate to take part in the voting process. Most of the American citizens do take part in the voting process of the congress members. However, if the same faces do prove to be so influential and popular yet they cannot drive any change in the United States politics, then the voters are prone to boredom. If the electorates do know that their congressperson will be reelected even before the elections are done (probably from the opinion polls analysis), they may have the feeling that there is no need to take part in such elections (Wilson 104).
If this happens that the same members get to be elected repeatedly it may contribute to the culture of the people to avoid taking part in their civil and democratic right of electing their leaders. In the long run, it may have an adverse effect whereby the wrong people will be occupying the congress positions, despite their poor performance records, albeit the fact that they are too influential to get reelected again and again. Through the introduction of term limits to the Congress, it will encourage many people to come out and take part in voting their candidates of choice and through this, democracy will be scaled up, to another level (Hedge 131).
The introduction of the term limits would reduce the cha...
