EU’s Policy Brief
The European Union is an intergovernmental and supranational organization composed of 28 member countries in Europe. In essence, it is an economic and political union that binds its member states to laws within a shared judicial and legislative institution. As such, the member countries adopt common laws in issues related to security, finance, and economies. The EU reinforces non-discrimination, solidarity, inclusion, justice, and tolerance. Besides, the organization advocates for human dignity, freedom, equality, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. With a setting like this, EU offers unprecedented operational and financial support to manage migration in Europe. To achieve this, the organization develops comprehensive approaches to reform asylum rules, protects its external border, as well as work with non-member states to inhibit irregular migration.
Moreover, the EU draft laws to enhance security in Europe. For instance, it has drafted legislation to fight terrorism, cross-border crime, and cybercrime. However, despite considerable progress in managing migration and ensuring security, the EU still needs measures to develop a responsible and balanced migration policy, buttressed by solidarity between its member states. This project seeks to develop a policy EU’s policy brief rudimentary to the problem of migrants and security. Furthermore, the project gives comprehensive recommendations for the response of EU to asylum based on internal security.
Problem Statement
Migration is a complex process involving the movement of population across societal boundaries by economic migrants, illegal migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers (Cheliotis 9). However, migration adversely affects societal security. In this context, migration in Europe potentially threatens the countries social stability, cultural identity, political independence, and territorial integrity. This implies that there is a need for reinforcing EU Agency for Asylum operational capacity, as well as implementing policies that will control and manage migration in Europe. Based on the EU, migration correlates societal security with economic and political security (Cheliotis 12). As a result, the organization is facing significant challenges in formulation and implementation of policy on managing migration and enforcing social security. Nevertheless, migration securitization has the potential to undermine human rights and economic efficiency which are among the core values of EU (Caporaso 38). In the end, migration is one of the major European policy agenda.
Challenges of internal security in Europe include political extremism, weakening of social ties and terrorism. All these security threats are closely associated with the influx of immigrants (Cheliotis 12). This raises a question on how contemporary democratic EU’s states can mitigate the challenges linked with migration. Generally speaking, migration is a significant challenge to internal security. Therefore, there is a need to formulate and implement policies aimed at controlling and limiting migrants’ inflow in Europe.
