The statement, “government is not the answer to our problem; the federal government is the setback,” by president Reagan describes today’s reality in the United States. The Founding Fathers outlined a system of government that primarily sought to preserve checks and balances crucial in making the federal government and the country prosperous. However, according to the 2017 annual Governance survey by Gallup, 60 percent of the U.S. population say that the federal government has eroded these checks and balances and imposed more power on activities and regulations that depict too much power (Swift). Since 2006, the American citizenry has voiced their concern over the federal government’s power with apprehension rising each year. Although the federal government of the United States is the national government that has authority to govern the country, it has too much power as portrayed by it spying on its citizens, abuse of the IRS, imposing of excessive taxes, controlling of who become leaders, introducing excessive EPA regulations and expensive healthcare.
Spying on American citizens is the primary indication that the government has excess power. Citizens have witnessed absurd abuse of the American Patriot Act. The NSA has misinterpreted and out lightly violated Section 215 of the act by amassing many data from average Americans in contravention of the Law. According to Jim Sensenbrenner, the Fifth Congressional District of Wisconsin representative and the author of the original Patriot Act, the federal government continues to abuse section 215 of the law (Sensenbrenner). He asserts that section 215 titled, business records provision gives intelligence authorities the power to collect information regarding an ongoing overseas intelligence investigation. However, citizens in 2013 discovered that the NSA utilizes this law to record phone calls, text messages, and other digital communication in disguise of combating terrorism (Sensenbrenner). Additionally, the sneak and peek warrants and wiretaps that allow the Federal Bureau of Investigation to access a citizen’s property, and materials without notifying them violate the Fourth Amendment that protects every individual from perverse searches. Therefore, the blatant violation of citizen’s privacy without putting into consideration their rights and feelings has bred mistrust, a portrayal of too much power.
The admitted abuse of power by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is the second indicator of too much power by the government. The IRS is the American tax collection agency, mandated to administer the Internal Revenue Policies passed by Congress. However, according to the National Public Radio, in October 2017, the institution admitted to abusing its power in granting tax exceptions to about forty non-governmental organizations (Overby 1). IRS mistreated the organizations by judging them based on their names and what they fought for, subjecting conservative organizations to unwarranted scrutiny and delaying in processing the tax exemptions.
