COVID-19 FUELING ANTI-ASIAN RACISM AND XENOPHOBIA WORLDWIDE
The past two years have been quite challenging for the world. The covid-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc for a better part of the two years. Governments have been forced to take drastic measures to contain it, while scientists have worked around the clock to try and get a vaccine for it. The biggest concern, however, was the source of the virus. Fingers were squarely pointed at China, where the virus is said to have originated in a laboratory in Wuhan. With this knowledge came discrimination against people from China and the larger Asian region. They were seen as the spreaders of the virus, considering that they came from the hotspot of the same. Other non-Chinese Asians were also targeted since their home nations were in close proximity to China, hence spreaders too. The more the virus continued wreaking havoc around the world, the stronger the anti-Asian sentiment grew. People the world over blamed them for the spread of the virus. There is a need for concern about anti-Asian tendencies related to the spread of covid-19, as it may result in other more serious, unforeseen implications.
Anti-Asian sentiments can be a dangerous precedent for a modern society that believes in globalization and inclusivity. According to Guo &Guo, Antonio Guterres said that the outbreak continued to cause hate and xenophobia, which urged the government to immediately enhance our society's immunity against the emerging virus worldwide (199).
Unfortunately, sometimes, hate originating from senior official leaders, either directly or indirectly, fueled racism or xenophobia as they used anti-Chinese sentiments. Besides, diverse political organizations and groups from all over the world also latched onto the racism and xenophobic conspiracy theories that were a serious threat to refugees, foreigners, and prominent people (Perng & Dhaliwal 381). Racist attacks against Asians and people of Asian descent arose during the pandemic, and the relevant authority needed to act soundly to end this trend. They continue to be scapegoated for the pandemic and its impacts, yet they are also victims of the same. John Sifton, director of Asian advocacy, coerced governments to increase general outreach, lead toleration, and end hatred speech to investigate and execute hostile crimes. While this is a good move, it essentially takes time to fully implement these proposals.
Furthermore, UN Committee played a trustworthy role in ensuring compliance with an international convention of eliminating racial discrimination act ratified in 182 countries worldwide. The primary aim of this committe...
