Racism and Ignorance and the Kardashian Family's Promotion of African Hair

Other (Not Listed) Instructions:

Our modern world is riddled with egregious examples of racism and misunderstandings of slavery and its meaning - worse, its legacy is often forgotten or derided. While writing an exam to a timer is one way to examine how well you absorbed the lessons of the past we have examined, we are collectively going to attempt an alternative approach this term.
Challenging racism and ignorance, particularly around slavery and its legacies, is an important skill. Doing so in a way that convinces listeners is a goal, even as we accept that we often will not successfully sway the person spouting their misunderstandings. These people may be family members, loved ones, or friends, and being able to confront their ignorance in a way that is elegant, informed, and refutes their misapprehension of history is crucial. You may never convince a bigoted friend or family member that their perspective is wrong, but you could well convince others, and above all, by challenging such viewpoints, you demonstrate that they do not go accepted.
To that end, you are here being asked to review a publically available comment from a public figure, celebrity, or news organization. You will then refute it using facts drawn from this course, coherently woven into a courteous and convincing argument. This is harder than it looks!

By writing a short blog-style response. No more than eight pages, and without need for citations or a bibliography (unless you would typically include those in an actual blog post!)
THIS IS WHAT NEEDS TO BE REVIEWED IN A BLOG STYLE RESPONSE
You're relaxing with a couple of friends and discussing various gossip and trivia. One of them is a hardcore KUWTK fan, and is eager to spill all the latest drama, news and more of the Kardashian family. He scrolsl through his phone to show you a recent Instagram photo featuring Kim Kardashian, and reminds you how much she's done to promote African style.
You can feel your eye twitch, and your hand slips of its own accord to a little device you keep in your pocket. It freezes time and you take a second to catch your breath, and then prepare your argument around African hair and what it means, and has meant.

Racism and Ignorance of African Hair
Racism and ignorance surrounding African hair have been a long-standing problem, and the Kardashian family is just the latest example of how it persists to this day. The way that people of African descent are treated, spoken to, and viewed in Western society is an area that requires much-needed discussion and debate, and the Kardashian family is a good place to start. No doubt you have seen the news stories and posts online about how the Kardashian women are praised and ignorant remarks made by fans on how they promote African hair. It is a sad state of affairs when peoples' ignorance and racism are used to elevate reality stars at the expense of the culture of black people, but that is the reality we are in.
When black people wear their natural hair like cornrows and dreadlocks, they are seen as ghetto or unkempt and are even denied opportunities in professional spaces because of how their hair looks. When white person emulates the culture of black hair, they get praised. A good example is when Zendaya came with dreadlocks to the Oscars' red carpet in 2015. E television presenter Giuliana Rancic said that she looks like she smells like a weed or patchouli oil during the fashion police program. She was knowingly or unknowingly showcasing a prejudice that a majority of the population has towards African hair. When a white person wears the same hair, they are commended as being revolutionary and promoting the African style. Well, Africans have always had those kinds of hairstyles and have always been seen as inferior for it.
There have been countless African men and women, girls and boys, that have suffered because of the ignorance of those who choose to style their hair in ways that are popular in Western society. Even with your limited exposure to the continent, you've seen enough to know that Africa is rich in culture and history. The traditional hair and hair care practices of African men and women have been misconstrued and even outr...
