Director Ang Lee: AAPI Research

Research Paper Instructions:

The Asian American I chose to study is Director Ang Lee. So it is necessary to study with him as the center. Specific requirements will be included in the guideline. Need to cite two sources in the book. I will also upload the book

Research an AAPI Project Overview Final Deadline: Wednesday, April 28, 11:59 PM (ET) Submit to Canvas. Points: 150 Assignment This project asks you to choose and research a significant Asian American or Pacific Islander American, a historical or contemporary public figure, who intrigues or interests you. I have provided lists and news article links on Canvas to help give you ideas. You will need to write a brief biography of their life in your own words, apply course texts to specific aspects of their life and career, and argue for their contributions to and/or influence on Asian America. Your project should also include at least one picture of the person(s) you’re researching. Other visual aids, such as PowerPoints, are optional, but may enhance the presentation of your project. Note: No more than three people can research the same AAPI. For example, only three people can research Bruno Mars. Research and Sources Everyone needs to do research for this project. Required Sources (at least 4 total): • at least two sources from readings or media on our syllabus -at least one must be from KAAS • at least two outside sources -at least one should preferably be a scholarly article from an academic, peerreviewed journal. These can be found in the IU Library’s academic databases. The scholarly article does not need to necessarily address your figure directly, but must relate to an aspect of their life. • Regardless of the type of source, make sure it is a credible, accurate, and relevant source. Use well-established sources, and they should fit these criteria. • Wikipedia is a good starting point for research. However, you may NOT list it as a source in your Works Cited (MLA) page. This is because Wikipedia can be edited by anyone, not necessarily experts or professional writers. Instead, on any Wikipedia page, go to the References section, and there you should find well-vetted sources. Word Limit, Format, etc The entire assignment should be 1000-1250 words (4-5 pages). Maintain objectivity in your project and write in the third person (he, she, they). Please refer to the person by their last name after introducing them in the beginning. Cite the sources when you paraphrase or directly quote material. I prefer MLA citation and formatting; MLA information is available on Canvas in the “Course Information” module. Please include a Works Cited page, or you may include the Works Cited entries below the last line of content. Timeline to Completion M 3/29 Discussion Due: Decide on AAPI you want to research and post to the AAPI Choice board. W 4/14 Progress Report Due on Canvas Recommended Steps: Research, Reading or Watching Sources, Outline, Drafting W 4/28* Final AAPI Project Due on Canvas *Any extensions MUST be requested at least 72 hours in advance. There is limited time at the end of the semester, and keep in mind that I have a deadline to submit grades

Director Ang Lee
Ang Lee is a prominent Taiwanese movie producer, screenwriter, and director who was born on October 23, 1954. His birthplace is Pingtung County, Taiwan. Initially, Lee directed Chinese movies before he started producing English films. The person became popular after he was featured in the film The Wedding Banquet (1993). The movie was described as a cross-cultural film, and became the first one from Taiwan to get an Academy Award nomination for being the best in the use of foreign language. In 1995, Lee directed his first movie, Sense and Sensibility, in English. His success was followed by The Ice Storm in 1997. He has directed other prominent films, such as the Ride with the Devil (1999), Hidden Dragon (2000), and Crouching Tiger (2000) (Mills 5). The paper's primary focus will be on Director Lee, whose picture is shown below, life and achievements in the film industry.
Lee’s journey in becoming one of the most famous film directors was not easy, and he had to face and overcome numerous challenges. His father encouraged his children to prosper in academics. In that light, he educated all his children. His family had a habit of watching movies weekly, mainly Hollywood films, such as Liang Shan Bo Yu Zhu Ying (1963). Although other family members considered it as just entertainment, Lee was obsessed with these movies. Lee was fascinated by European and American movies (Mills 17). He went to the United States of America (USA) for his bachelor’s degree, after which he enrolled for a master’s degree in film production at the New York University. Lee graduated in 1984. Indeed, it was at this point that he started doing something he loved and was passionate about. Nevertheless, Lee had to convince his father to take a course in arts since the old man believed it was a disgraceful occupation.
Lee is a unique director and filmmaker in the movie industry today. In 1982, he married Jane Lin, and they have two children, Haan Lee and Mason Lee. Lee’s films cross low and high cultures from east to west. The best description to give about this film director would be the epitome of cultural diversity and globalization. Lee has continually shown to the world that globalization in the film industry is real. Although he was born in Taiwan, he spent many years in the USA. Being raised in a different culture made Lee see things from distinctive perspectives, which is something he portrays in all the films he directs. Some of his movies capture some aspects of the Taiwanese, American, and Chinese cultures. Lee does not only harmonize different cultures to showcase their impacts on people, but he also expresses the conflicts and similarities between western and eastern traditions (Dilley 47). The director combines different subjects and genres in his films and explores the relationship between individuals and society. Lee is one of the filmmakers and directors who use multiculturalism and cultural diversity inherently in his movies. He bridges a gap that many film producers put aside to avoid losing their audience due to the reflection of cultural conflicts and...
