Malnutrition in the US
Malnutrition is the condition that develops when the body is deficient in vitamins, minerals, and other vital nutrients that are needed to maintain healthy body and organ functions. Malnutrition can be brought about by either undernourishment when not enough essential nutrients are consumed or are excreted faster than they are being replaced. It can also happen from overnutrition when too much of the wrong thing is consumed and without sufficient exercise. The intake of too many dietary replacements can also lead to malnutrition. This essay looks into causes and remedies to malnutrition in the United States
In the United States, malnutrition cases, especially among children and young adults, are rising. The majority of these people are malnourished because of dietary imbalance rather than nutrition deficiencies, with the majority consuming high fat and salt processed foods instead of whole foods ("Malnutrition"). Because of the drastic dietary imbalance, the quality of nutrition is risked. The effects of this are rapidly manifesting in the forms of malnutrition.  Therefore, nutritional adjustments must be made to incorporate whole foods, vegetables, and fruits in the daily meal plan to avoid imminent malnutrition disaster and reap health benefits for all US populations.
Malnutrition is relatively easy to identify. In children, they appear shorter for their age, thin and protruding bellies, almost like they are constantly bloated. Individuals who are malnutrition also suffer weakened immune systems and can suffer nutritional disorders that affect systemic body functions such as the senses of sight, taste, and even smell. Malnutrition can also have a psychiatric impact with effects on moods and causing anxiety to people who suffer it. The other symptoms include pale and dry skin, rashes, changes in skin pigmentation, thin hair, achy joints, and nigh blindness or increased sensitivity to light. It is relatively easy to diagnose malnutrition with a simple blood test, sometimes even a urine test, to measure a patient's vitamins, minerals, and how much it is being excreted before assimilation.
Treatment of malnutrition is perhaps the most uncomplicated treatment there is. Because it is a deficiency of essential nutrients in the body, treatment requires consuming foods rich in these nutrients. Different fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and proteins are rich in varying levels of vitamins and minerals. To treat malnutrition, these must be consumed in the right proportions and combinations to restore the body to its optimum. Additionally, unlike other treatments that a patient is not required to take indefinitely after being cured, a proper diet must be maintained to ensure that one does not get back to a state of being malnourished. In severe cases, however, where patients cannot absorb nutrients ingested via the mouth, they may receive these nutrients intravenously or through a feeding tube inserted into the gastrointestinal tract.
While there are numerous stories on malnutrition across the world, very few people realize that malnutrition is a chronic problem in the United States. The premise is that the United State...
