In the Tempest, Shakespeare highlights varying characters, with each identified personally based circumstances that brought them to the abandoned isle in the Mediterranean Sea. The characters created by Shakespeare seem to exemplify human-nature relations and civilization and tries to distinct monsters from men. Caliban exhibits absolute complexity and numerous aspects. Caliban is a character that goes through a lot of suffering. Prospero subjected him to torture and so many wrongdoings. He endured suffering, but his attitude towards the innocent, like Miranda, tells the reader that Caliban was not wronged at all, and that was the kind of treatment he deserved (Shakespeare). The reader expects Caliban to be calm and loving in his relationship with people. He is at times likable and could evoke feelings of sympathy from the audience. His rogue behavior indicates that Caliban was never a sympathetic character. This paper explores how Caliban was not a sympathetic character through his code of conduct, plotting to kill Prospero, collaborating with Stefano to betray Prospero, and attempting to sell and rape Miranda. 
Caliban's code of conduct was childish, vulgar and lots of malice accompanied him, proving he was not a sympathetic character. His nickname, the beast, has a negative implication and can make a reader not like him as soon as they are introduced to the character. His background is disgusting, which makes the reader have zero pity for him. His father is unknown, and his mother, Sycorax, is a witch. Such automatically associates him with the devil, another suggestively weird life setting. The reader would not be impressed by all these negativities highlighted about Caliban. Caliban's uncivilized nature makes him so unwelcoming because people do not want to be associated with him. This implies that he is not willing to have visitors on the island. He is too mean to strangers, which portrays his inhumane nature. Any reader interested in knowing more about the character would not be impressed by Caliban's unwelcoming nature.
Caliban's code of conduct presents a dishonest and selfish person. This reduces his chances of being considered a sympathetic and likable character. He could have been more kind and welcoming to Prospero. Caliban is not willing to adopt any acceptable code of conduct. Caliban is not even willing to cooperate, considering the many endeavors Prospero offers to him. Prospero educates Caliban and even goes a step ahead to offer shelter for him in his cave (Wright). Through such, Prospero demonstrates absolute generosity, care, and a lot of compassion. Shockingly, Caliban just takes Prospero for granted. He even underestimates Prospero's magical power and has an aggressive trait. This high-order dishonesty and ignorance could not evoke the audience's positive feelings towards him. The audience would otherwise develop a negative attitude towards him. Caliban's actions are proof that he is not a sympathetic character because he should respect Prospero.
