Hollywood has created numerous films based on historical figures and events. Many are excellent and accurate representations while others are based on inaccuracies and biased perceptions. Your task is to choose andwatch a movie from the list provided, researchthe historical figure or event presented in the film, and present a film review assessing the film’s historical accuracy and its entertainment value.This paper asks that you take part in the scholarly conversation regarding a specific historical figure or historical event portrayed in a Hollywood film by evaluating the legitimacy of what the film is saying about that person or event. You will determine whether the events taking place within the film are accurate or inaccurate and then explain why to your reader. The main feature of this explanation is that you must draw upon at least twooutside sources for the paper to support your evaluation. All of the sources should come from the Cisco or Abilene Library (either books or journal articles from databases).This assignment should do several things for you: On the one hand, it should continue giving you some practice summarizing, paraphrasing, quoting, or documenting. Further, it should also expand your rhetorical repertoire quite a bit by asking you to argue and to locate legitimate support for that argument. Finally, the task should get you into the library and, specifically, into databases and other reference sources you will need to use for the rest of the semester and for years to come. SPECIAL GUIDELINES FOR THE ASSIGNMENT:In order to prepare for thispaper, you will want to watch the film you’ve chosen carefully in order to locate events that you might respond to. Please note that you may evaluate just a single event/scene if you want to (assuming you’ve got plenty to say in response to it), or you may deal with several (I don’t think I’d do beyond three in this page length). Speaking of those outside sources, in order to help me see how you are using them, I will require a photocopy of your sources. These sources will be submitted to me electronicallyon Canvas along with the final copy of your paper. (More on that to come). FORMAT:Like all other writings for this semester, this three-to-four page paper will be in MLA format –meaning, that it will need to be in Times New Roman, 12-pointfont, and double spaced. Additionally, your documentation (meaning how you cite your sources) will also need to be in MLA requiring that you have Works Cited and properly formatted citations.AUDIENCE:As for all writings this semester, Writing #1 is to be written for the rhetorical context of the freshman composition community at Cisco. Troy: Hollywood Versus the Ancient Greek Story
The Hollywood film “Troy,” directed by Wolfgang Petersen and first seen on the screens in 2004, earned applause due to its awe-inspiring representation of the Trojan War and its versatile performance actors and actresses. It received various awards, including the Teen Choice Awards: Choice Movie Actor in drama or action and Teen Choice Award for Choice Movie. However, it also received plentiful criticisms due to its inaccuracies versus its inspiration, Homer’s “The Iliad” and the authentic Ancient Greek accounts.
The plot of Petersen’s Troy revolves around the revenge of King Menelaus of Sparta to Troy because Paris, the prince of Troy, stole his wife, Helen, during the banquet in Sparta, which was meant to strengthen the peace agreements between the two nations. King Menelaus asked for his brother’s help, Agamemnon, to seize Troy. With the latter’s help, he called on to Achilles, a half-god and the strongest soldier at the time, who answered to his request. Achilles lives to fight, and he wanted to conquer Troy for fame and power (Petersen).
During their first attempt to obliterate Troy’s high walls, Patroclus, Achilles’ most beloved friend, pretended to be him in battle. He was able to mimic Achilles’ movements and strategies. However, once he ran across Hector, the older prince of Troy and brother of Paris, he met his end. This devastated Achilles, and he vowed to destroy Troy with his own hands. In the end, the Spartans traversed the high walls and conquered Troy. However, they lost their best soldier, Achilles, by saving the love of his life, Briseis, from danger (Petersen).
One of the unmistakable inaccuracies portrayed by Petersen’s version is the lack of the celebration of the strength of women. In the film, Helen was portrayed as a helpless woman who needs to be defended by men. The screenplay denies Helen’s beauty as a power source, which is the typical representation of women in society. Moreover, her beauty was highly disregarded due to Achilles’ actor, the famous Brad Pitt. In Ancient Greece, which illustrates the genuine ancient Greek culture, female prowess was feared due to its potential destruction. Helen’s beauty was described as the best of all time. Thus, her erotic power is vicious and matches that of Achilles’ physical strength (Blondell).
Another inaccuracy in the film is when Achilles conversed with his mother, the sea nymph, Thetis, and mentioned that he would have wife and children and grow old happily if he stayed. However, Achilles’ real fate was a choice between a long but unknown journey and heroic glory rather than the need to have a heterosexual love. Although Achilles indeed fell in love with Briseis, the moment he talked with his mother about a life yet to be lived is far from reality (Blondell).
