Research Paper Instructions:

As you read George Orwell’s 1984, you will be working on a research paper. Your research paper will be over one of the following topics below. Choose a topic and make notes as you read about how the novel presents the issue.
• totalitarianism
• presentation of lies as truth
• propaganda
• electronic surveillance
• government control
Your paper will consist of at least 500 words and be written in MLA format. All of the sources that you include in your research paper must be cited properly in both your essay and on a works cited page at the end of your essay. You will need to follow the following structure for your research paper:
I. Introduction
Your introduction should essentially introduce your chosen topic. You will need to define your topic and its potential impact, and then you will need to develop a coherent thesis. Your thesis should consist of the topic chosen and how that topic can be of a negative or positive impact. You will support your thesis in all three body paragraphs, so be sure that you are able to do that as you’re thinking about your thesis statement.
II. 1984
In your first section, you will write about your chosen topic and how it is present in 1984. Remember that you must support your thesis here—so, how did your topic make a positive or negative impact in 1984? What is the impact? Remember to substantiate your ideas by using text evidence from 1984.
III. Current Event
In your second section, you will write about your chosen topic and how it is present in our current times. You can pull one current event, or you can pull several current events. How is your chosen topic impacting our nation today? How can you support your thesis through these current events? Be sure to provide sources for your events. You can do this by saying something like “ABC News on August 2, 2021 reported” or The Wall Street Journal stated on Sept. 6, 2021. Hyperlink your statement to your source.
IV. Ties to other Novels, Movies, Media, etc. This section is optional.
Your final section will be on a chosen novel, movie, or media or video game that ties back to your topic. How does your chosen work display your chosen topic and its positive or negative impact mentioned in your thesis statement?
V. Conclusion
You will tie all two or three sections together here—how does your topic show similarities within 1984, your chosen current event(s), and your chosen novel, movie, or media?

Title
George Orwell’s novel 1984 demonstrated the significant impact of government control, which gained a seemingly immeasurable and unlimited power. The leaders controlled the movements of the public and ruled them until the smallest detail of the lives of ordinary citizens. The immense government control instilled fear, which birthed blind shadowing by the public. The power was garnered from the linear hierarchical structure, headed by an almost omnipotent and omnipresent “Big Brother,” giving them eyes and ears everywhere and making their decisions impossible to be disobeyed. It is comparable to some events in modern-day society as Orwell’s ideologies perpetuated in reality, through the evil philosophies of political monsters, and in the fictional world, where his dystopian influence was not trivial.
Tannert described the government structure in 1984, as illustrated by Orwell. The Government of Oceania is lead by Big Brother, who was speculated of not having a physical form, thus being compared to a seemingly divine figure as if the leader were not legitimate and only served as a dummy for those who indeed controlled the government. Next to Big Brother was the Inner Party, whose members are responsible for firmly managing the country if dismissed. Under the Inner Party was the Outer Party, whose members act as the direct henchmen of their superiors. The rest of the population, around 85% of the total population, served no purpose for the government but acted only as mere machinery.
The main problem in this structure is that it allows the leaders to manipulate history and the reporting of the current events to make a façade for their evil actions, justifiable as actions in good faith. The Party’s absolute control made the public play a make-believe story that the Party liberated them from previous global monstrosities. However, the Party manipulated historical data to match their objectives at the time. This perpetuated discrimination, violence, and aggression, especially to the remaining 85% of the population who do not stand in the government (Lenguas 7-10).
In 2019, 70 years after 1984 was published, the predictions of Orwell became fully realize...
