Film Composition Research Essay. Analysis of Chungking Express

In a nutshell: Use close reading to make an interpretive argument about wo compositional elements in a film, at least one of which must be sound or editing, and place your argument in conversation with at least 2 scholarly sources. 
There are several aims of this third paper. First, to help you further develop your interpretive skills by analyzing how two compositional elements (one of which must be sound or editing) work in tandem or in opposition to help create meanings in a particular film. Second, to expose you to other arguments about the film and allow you to situate your own thoughts in relation. Third, to use the feedback you received on your second paper to improve. 
For this paper, you will analyze Chungking Express. Choosing one or two scenes that will allow for an interesting reading is part of the assignment. You must form your argument around the use of exactly two compositional elements, one of which must be editing or sound; finally, you must incorporate some research about what others are saying about the film you’ve chosen. These are all basic requirements— not fulfilling any of the requirements detailed in this and the previous paragraph will result in a failing grade on the paper. 
Start with your observations and notes from screening. Look for patterns, structures, contrasts, emphasis, and progression in the way in which mise‐en‐scène or cinematography is used in the film. Then consider how the film’s use of that compositional element contributes to one of the film’s meanings. A compelling paper includes a strong, original argument, detailed evidence to support it, analysis that shows how the evidence supports the argument, and a clear organization (paper structure, including an introduction, thesis, and conclusion) to communicate all that to your reader. Do not simply list out your observations but use them as evidence to build an interpretive argument about the film. Also, do not argue that the compositional element is successful, makes the film more realistic, or allows the audience to better identify with the characters—those are all evaluative claims, and this paper requires you to make an interpretative argument. 
You *are* expected to do additional research for this assignment beyond what we have read for class. Your argument should be your own, but in order to help position your argument as part of the scholarly conversation, you will need to use at least 2 scholarly secondary sources. 
A scholarly source will have footnotes, endnotes, and/or sources listed in a works cited or bibliography. Please don't just google and put some random website. Scholarly sources means sources from professional journals.  
Do not simply include a paragraph after your introduction that summarizes the two sources you find. You must incorporate the sources properly and really engage with them. This means that you will need to position your argument in relation to your sources, or use your sources to situate details of your own readings.
Thesis
° In Dee Rees's Pariah (2011), the styles of dress and music that Alike is drawn to on her journey to self-expression show that, within the black lesbian community of that time, sexuality could be expressed playfully through gender performance. Yet, Alike’s musical and dress decisions toward the end of the film show that she, and others, also have the option of forging ahead with their own styles without losing the support of their queer communities. In other words, Pariah shows that there are many different ways to exist as a queer black woman.
