The research paper is an analytical paper that enables you to go into greater depth on witch craft concerning women & gender in Early Modern Europe.
This final paper is a work of synthesis that puts the sources you have read into conversation with one another. Try to AVOID treating each source in a separate paragraph; aim is not to summarize the narrative of each book or article. Instead, focus on evaluating the sources together, for example: What are the shared questions that guide the sources you read? How do they identify the subject matter they will examine? Do the authors look to the same kinds of sources to make their case? How do their methodological approaches compare? How do these works change the way we understand the history of women and gender in early modern Europe? Again, the THOMAS acronym may be helpful in highlighting the questions to ask of your sources. (answer these questions through out 5 pages regarding all 5 sources)
This final essay should also present a clear argument in the introduction, in the conclusion, and in your analysis in each body paragraph. In the introduction, present your findings as a concise and strong argument. Your interpretation and voice are key here. Please also be sure to include in your introduction an explanation (or “roadmap”) that outlines as precisely as possible how you will demonstrate your argument in the remaining pages of your paper. Next, please explain how your research topic is related to our course material. How do your findings speak to, clarify, nuance, or complicate the findings we discussed as a class this semester? Explain to your reader where and how your paper maps on to what we have learned.
The remaining body paragraphs should present your analysis of the five secondary sources that you have read in preparation for your essay. Successful analysis will demonstrate the claims you are making in your paper. To do so, use evidence in the form of quotation, summary, or paraphrase; in all cases, cite that evidence. Each time you present evidence, explain to your reader what it means and how it supports your interpretation. These claims you are making should together support your central argument.
The conclusion should summarize your evaluation of the topic. Revisit your thesis and the key conclusions you have demonstrated throughout your paper. This is also the place to consider the “so what?” questions of what is at stake in these sources. If you would like to draw comparisons to contemporary issues, this is the appropriate place in the paper to do so.
Finally, include a bibliography. Present a list of sources consulted (the 5 attached and course material), alphabetized by author. For all references, use a standard academic citation style, MLA. The bibliography for the final essay should not include annotation.

Abstract
My research topic is the growth and decline of witchcraft in early modern Europe. My primary research will be based upon the subjects of how and why witchcraft and witchcraft hunting came to an end. What caused the accusations and what was the change. This topic relates to the general field of the history of women and gender because witchcraft is a phenomena that includes religion, ideas, laws, culture, agency of women, women’s learning, there work and identity, they way there life cycle spanned out in early modern Europe. Therefore, its important to understand witchcraft to understand women in early modern Europe. The assigned reading inthis course that caused my interest in this subject is ‘Malleus Maleficarum’. The document was so vile and the idea of it being an element still relevant since the 1480’s makes it just as interesting. The way I identified the sources I will be using for this project is by going through the database of OSU’s library. I found books by authors that have done research based upon evidence and forensics. I found book reviews that give not just the authors perspective but the reviewers also. I found journals/articles that give new ideas of witchcraft with arguments that are plausible. I intend to use 5 secondary sources that will explore witchcraft deeper in depth. I will use the women talked about in (lips combs work) as the central piece of the paper to further investigate the larger theme. It will be my voice and interpretations of these sources.

In a highly patriarchal society, any form of deviation from the social norm or acceptable behavior in society would attract the scorn of perceived conventional people and even exert punitive measures from the existing safeguards against such occurrences. The existing social controls included the legal systems and religious principles embraced in the early modern European countries, with the latter enjoying more influence over the former’s operations. Women’s quest for change in favor of their plight across the social, political, and economic domains was deemed deviant behaviors, with close ties to demonic or ungodly sources. Gillette de Girardet’s protest against Anthoine Dumas’ marriage proposal before the consistory in January 1850 in France is an excellent depiction of how the existing social controls easily criminalized women’s quest to liberate themselves from the oppressive patriarch systemCITATION Lip19 \p 4 \l 1033 (Lipscomb 4). She alludes to her spiritual marriage to Jesus Christ in refusing her engagement to Dumas, which antagonizes the men of the consistoryCITATION Lip19 \p 4 \l 1033 (Lipscomb 4). The men of the consistory believed that their knowledge and relationship to God superseded that of Gillette and women to establish that her claims had no basisCITATION Lip19 \p 4 \l 1033 (Lipscomb 4). The determination of her case before the consistory in France creates a vivid depiction of how the existing social controls influenced the characterization of women as deviants across early modern Europe. The ease of characterizing women as deviants in some instances, especially the extreme cases of defiance among women, led to their close association with the use of supernatural forces to pursue and achieve their perceived anti-social desires. Among such allegations would be their engagement in witchcraft or entering into a treaty with the devil to gain manipulative power to meet their desired outcomes. It suffices, therefore, that women were more likely to be associated with deviant or criminal acts in the quest for realizing their rights and freedoms across the social, political, and economic domains. Women’s widespread association with witchcraft and the female gender’s susceptibility to the same in early modern Europe are functions of some of the abovementioned factors. This paper seeks to unveil the manifestation of underlying factors behind gender and women’s relation to witchcraft and their subsequent impact on the growth and decline of witchcraft across the early modern European countries.
Early modern Europe was characteristic of patriarch principles edifying the dominance of the male gender and its pertinent oppression of women across the social, political, and economic domains. Attempts by women to exert their positions in opposition to the weight of oppression meted on them were thwarted by the rigid social controls limiting fair and just hearing of their perspectives and pleas for instituting desired changes.
