Martin Luther King, Jr (MLK) was an advocate for human rights and focused on equal privileges to the black population in the US. MLK came up with different approaches to handle the issue of racial discrimination and segregation in the US. The “Letter from Birmingham Jail” also known as “The Negro Is Your Brother” was written by MLK on April 16, 1963 (Lucas 8). The letter provided the necessary information to the readers on the need for taking action on unjust laws in society. People have a moral responsibility of stranding against the unjust laws that cause harm to a particular group of people. Justice should be available in all parts of the nation for social and economic development.
Event Leading to MLK Arrest in Birmingham
MLK organized peaceful protests to deal with racism and racial segregation in the US. The protests on the South focused on making sure that the blacks enjoy the public facilities. The peaceful changes focused on handling different racial problems evident in the nation. The equal treatment of all citizens was crucial in dealing with the various issues in the US. The civil rights revolution was strongly opposed by the white population in the US. The civil rights revolution concentrated on equality and making sure that the black population has an opportunity to succeed in life. Racial segregation made it difficult for blacks to enjoy a good education, health, and other public facilities (Birmingham Times). MLK was protesting against the treatment of blacks in Birmingham, Alabama. The court had ordered that no protests were allowed in Birmingham but MLK held the protests. Birmingham was a hard place for blacks to live in due to constant racial discrimination and segregation. MLK was jailed for violating the law against mass protests in Birmingham.
Background of the Letter
The letter to address the social system in the United States. The blacks in the US were facing a hard time to access crucial public amenities. Racial segregation started from church, transport, businesses, and health facilities. The dividing of facilities to the colored and white population in the nation caused racial problems in the US. Blacks and other minority groups in the US experienced a hard time living a comfortable life in the US. The South was the hardest hit place in racial discrimination and segregation (Augustine 250). Blacks in Birmingham, Alabama faced extended cases of racial problems. The letter by MLK criticized the social injustice in parts of the US. MLK stated that social injustice anywhere is a threat to the overall justice of the nation. The unsolved police brutality, bombing, and unjust courts in Birmingham were addressed in the letter. The painful experience of blacks required the application of a proper civil rights policy. The KKK is a group that concentrated on building white supremacy in the US.
