Introduction
The triumph to tragedy story is about the struggle of the African American Soldiers for their recognition and citizenship and manhood during the Spanish –America-Cuba Filipino War. It focuses on gender analysis while demonstrating how the black soldiers fought in the war for two important reasons such as the means of exercising their citizenship and demonstrating that they were real men. There was a national obsession for the reflection of manhood and backgrounds. The purpose of this essay is to provide the re-examination of the black soldiers within the Spanish-American-Cuban-Filipina War.
Foner’s “Triumph to Tragedy” exposes various complexities the African soldiers faced during the Spanish American war. There were misunderstanding and misinterpretation of the identities of the African-American of the late nineteenth century within the American military. The African American soldiers fought in the war not only for the independence of Cuba but also for the suppression of a colonial rebellion in the Philippines (Donaldson 65).
