Operation Barbarossa, which was named after Frederick Barbarossa, the medieval German ruler, was the code name given to Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union during World War 2 that began on June 22, 1941. The very ambitious operation marked both a declaration of Hitler's desire to conquer the Russian territories and the start of a war which proved most important in deciding the victors of the war. The Germans had begun stationing troops near the Soviet border even before the battle in the Balkans had finished. In preparation for the battle, Hitler sentabout 1 million Axis soldiers and 3.5 million German soldiers to the Soviet border,stockpiled materiel in the East and launched many aerial surveillance missions over Soviet territory. The Soviets were still taken by surprise - more due to Stalin's belief that the Third Reich was less likely to attack only two years after the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. The Soviet ruler also believed that the Nazis were likely to finish the battle with Britain before opening a new front.
