Final Project
I. Purpose
The study of migration and its relation to climate justice is not restricted to academia; it is a ground-breaking area of research and action. This project asks: what are the connections to inequality and the current climate crisis? How is inequality reflected in the way we study forced displacement, migration, and intersections of race, gender, and class? Your project can range from historical to contemporary events. With these questions in mind, how are these events, and phenomena being told, described and represented? And how do they form part of what and who we are or want to be as a society and/or community?
If you want to include other materials outside from the class materials, they need to be related to your topic and to the class.
II. Description
This project consists on the student creating an artifact. You are encouraged to use your own writing, pictures, video, among other materials. Remember that your topic is linked to a global, larger problem and/or social phenomena, and to the class. For this reason, you are encouraged to link your topic to a larger discussion. For example, if your topic is about forced migration and climate change refugees  in  South  Asia  you  can  link  this  topic  to  a  larger  discussion  on  global  crises  and  the Anthropocene. You are required to submit an artifact. A constructed piece, video, pictures, any digital assignment is welcomed. The artifact must reflect our class discussions and assigned readings.
III. Requirements for the artifact
Provide an analysis based on class materials
A digital artifact is required
Situate the political, social and historical context of your topic
Create an artifact that reflects your topic and is related to our class.
Include a one-page description of your artifact
Please note that you can write a research paper, as an option.
IV. Your project’s feedback
Be sure to include your instructor’s feedback
Email us with any questions you have
Seek advice and feedback when needed

How Can Capitalism Lead To the Exploitation of Workers?
After reading Moore's article, it gave me the motive to research about how capitalism leads to the exploitation of workers. Moore's article speaks about the exploitation of labor produced by marginalized groups of people, as well as the concept of value in a capitalist society. He questions what is valued in capitalist societies, how value represents wealth and time, and how this helps us understand the extent to which capitalism can exist in nature. Moore states that to value only some work means that most work is not valued at all. He says, "The simplification, rationalization, and homogenization of socio-ecological life that occurs through manifold commodity regimes from the assembly line to agro-monocultures works through a simultaneous process of exploitation (of paid labor) and appropriation (of unpaid work)" I believe in many ways this relates to my life. Many companies are looking to hire unpaid interns, which I believe is exploiting students and others who may not have the means or documentation to work in the U.S. For several instances, we either see paid labor being unfavorable to the workers or exploited unpaid labor being presented as beneficial for the worker, reinforcing Moore's beliefs.
Capitalism is an economic structure whereby a nation's trade and industry are controlled by the private sector rather than by the state. On the other hand, exploitation is a situation whereby owners in the private sector tend to take advantage of the workers unfairly. Notably, the first theory of exploitation was established by Karl Marx, who argued that workers in capitalist societies tend to undergo exploitation since they are forced to sell/offer their labor power for less than the value of the goods/products they produce with their lab. Marx also stated that workers are usually exploited by the capitalist's owners who use their privileged position to take advantage of the desperate. Moore has illustrated this by demonstrating how companies in the U.S. are taking advantage of desperate students and undocumented immigrants by enrolling them in unpaid internship programs. In this sense, the main aim of most companies and business owners in capitalist societies is to make profits at the expense of the welfare of their workers. Ca...
