Thesis

In this essay, you will be tasked with developing a central thesis statement. The thesis will state the main idea of your paper, and will likely reflect an opinion or judgment that you will attempt to prove throughout the paper. A strong thesis statement will give direction to your paper by structuring what you will write about. It also functions to inform your reader of what you will discuss in the body of your paper. All paragraphs of your essay should explain, support, or engage with your thesis in some way.

You may write an argumentative thesis or an analytic thesis. (These will be defined in class.)

Referencing

A strong thesis statement requires proof. It is not merely a statement of fact that can go unquestioned. You should support your thesis statement with detailed evidence.

Since this is a research essay, you will be required to include four or more academic sources in your essay, plus at least one reference to our textbook (Koc, Sumner and Winson 2017), meaning you must include a minimum of five academic sources in total. Academic sources include: books or book chapters, peer reviewed journal articles, lectures, research papers or studies conducted by individual scholars or by research organizations/institutes.

You may also include non-academic sources such as newspaper articles, editorials, blogs or websites or references to TV shows, films, etc.  These sources will be included in addition to required academic sources.

Please use the American Psychological Association (APA) referencing style guide to properly format in-text references and sources for your References page. You MUST include a References page at the end of your assignment listing the sources you have referenced in the body of your response.

If you do not know what APA style is please consult Ryerson’s Style Guide: https://www.ryerson.ca/content/dam/studentlearningsupport/resources/citation-conventions/APA%20Basic%20Style%20Guide.pdf

  1. 1.     Proposal and Annotated Bibliography (Due: Week 5, Feb 14 – 11:59pm) – 10%

Before you begin writing your essay, you will need to begin to conduct research about a particular subject, issue or area of focus. Do not take this research phase lightly! It is very important that you begin to read about a particular topic before you formulate your thesis.

Once you have gathered and read through a few different credible sources, reflect on the topic so that you may frame a potential thesis statement and draft a research proposal.

 Components of the Proposal:

  1. Topic description/synopsis – think of this is as an introduction to the topic where you will explain key information  to your reader about the topic of interest. Consider the “5 W’s”:

What is the specific issue or topic that you will address in this essay?  Explain its significance.

Why did this specific issue take place? And how does it relate to, or demonstrate some aspect of food studies?

Who are the key stakeholders/individuals or community groups that are affected by this issue?

Where did this take place, and under what circumstances/context? I.e. Locate the specific place(s) relevant to your topic. Is this a Toronto-related issue? Canadian? Global? Etc.

When did it take place? I.e. Is this a historical example that you will research, a contemporary/current event, or is it an ongoing phenomenon?

All of these details will be necessary information for the reader (and essay grader) to understand the subject, issue, events that you will research. Please try to make it clear why this topic is interesting/important to you. Explain also how it is interesting and related to social inequality.

This section should be brief. I.e. 250-300 words (1 page maximum), so you will need to synthesize this information, and write it very clearly and directly.

  1. Thesis statement – State the main idea of your paper, and will likely reflect an opinion or judgment that you will attempt to prove throughout the paper. A strong thesis statement will give direction to your paper by structuring what you will write about. (See above for more info. See also slides in D2L: Writing Effective Thesis Statements & Avoiding Plagiarism)

  1. Annotated Sources – Finally, you will include three (3) properly cited sources that relate to your topic. These sources will be written in APA format. Underneath each source include an annotation, or description of the article. This description will include:

a)     a description of the author(s)’s key arguments; i.e. what is the main point of this work

b)     a brief explanation of how you will use this work in your own research paper. How/why is it relevant to the topic that you have selected/how will it support your thesis?

Note: Each annotation should be no more than 100-150 words maximum. These are intended to be very brief.

Proposal Grade Breakdown:

Topic description/synopsis : 2 marks

Thesis statement: 2 marks

3 Annotations:  2 marks x 3 = 6 marks

Total: 10%

  1. 2.     Final Research Essay (Due: Week 11, Thurs. Apr 2 – 11:59pm) – 25%

The Impact of Food Advertising and Packaging on Consumers
The widespread and rapid expansion use of social media and internet marketing has greatly influenced company insights, consumer purchasing reactions, and brand communication. New formats of advertising affect consumer reactions and influence their purchase decisions. In the current world, the number of consumers who are getting information and other requirements from online sources is increasing, and this also helps the consumers in quickly realizing their needs through Internet. New developments in technology have created effective platforms that are used by advertisers and marketers. As such, the issue of the influence of advertising and branding on consumers in the food industry has attracted attention from researchers. In this regard, different types of food advertisements can interfere with people's choices through improper information such as packaging and color, which can have a significant impact on the health of teenagers as well as adults.
Digital advertising is one of the most effective ways of delivering promotional customized offerings as well as relevant marketing messages to a targeted consumer niche. Digital advertising currently plays a crucial role in effecting consumer preferences, building a positive consumer attitude, as well as influencing the consumers’ purchasing decisions on the services and products which are offered in different forms of advertisements (Orquin, Bagger, Lahm, Grunert, & Scholderer, 2020). Digital ads are appealing to consumers when used as communication tools, and help in convincing consumers in the target consumer niche in different locations. Digital advertising includes display and search advertisements, as well as any form of marketing communication which is executed through the use of social media, the web, and mobile technology. Such forms of advertisements have become common in the food industry, and they are used by brands to change the attitude and behavior of the consumers towards the products that are shown on the advertisements. As a result, this leads to consumers purchasing foods without considering their calorie values and the impact that this could have on their bodies (Koubaa & Eleuch, 2020). This influence is due to the advertisements that brand put up on the social media and other platforms of advertisements.
Owing to the rising obesity epidemic in America, more and more consumers are buying food selectively. Most of the consumers have become aware of the need for knowledge on nutrition and the impact of the foods on their health. Such consumers rely on different sources of information on nutrition and dietary skills (Roose & Mulier, 2020). With the growth of streaming media, the first source of information that consumers receive is advertising, which is conducted in different platforms such as mainstream media and social media marketing. Studies have shown that different consumerists of food have different advertising, which is a serious visual impact on people. For example, red means high calories while green or blue is low calories and high fiber. This has significantly influenced pac...
