The residential care makes it possible for people who are mentally disabled to access care in a group setting; in this case, the patients receive care and supervision from professionals such as social workers. It is critical to note that a residential care setting may experience numerous issues which make hinder the effectiveness of the assistance and help offered to adults with mental disability. For instance, inadequate funding may make it challenging for residential care agencies to sustain patients and provide health care services that may improve their health situation. This literature examines and analyzes articles in social work to determine and explain the challenges experienced in residential care for mentally disabled adults.
Usually, adults with developmental disabilities encounter stressful social interaction, and they have to use abnormal and maladjusted coping techniques to enable them to manage their interactions. It is essential to comprehend that mental disability is a huge social problem as it affects both young and adults. It is estimated that in 2017, there were over eleven million adults in the United States who had serious mental illnesses (SMI); besides, the prevalence of the SMI is higher in women than in men (National Institute of Mental Health, 2019). Additionally, young adults who are aged between 18 and 25 years are at a high risk of suffering from mental issues as compared to adults aged 26 years and older. The World Health Organization, however, suggests that older adults who are aged over sixty years are at high risk for developing mental disorders; this is because these individuals experience both physical and mental health issues that may be uncommon among young people (World Health Organization, 2017). Mentally disabled adults may have a shorter life span as compared to healthy older people; this makes it necessary to establish residential care facilities where these patients can receive care from qualified professionals.
Lack of teamwork among the professionals involved in taking care of the mentally ill adults may include the quality of care offered to the patients. Although, social workers such as psychiatric, psychologists, and mental health nurses are in a position to develop good relationships and understand the mentally challenged adults. This may make it possible for the professionals to have a deep and clear comprehension of the patient’s problems and would, therefore, make it possible for the implementation strategies that would promote the condition of the patients. It is, however, critical to understand that lack of teamwork among specialists in residential centers; tends to affect the effectiveness of the help and assistance offered to the patients.
