China’s emergence has often been at the center of debates with some arguing that its growth poses a potential threat to the world. Others, however, see China’s growth as a blessing that could help ensure global cooperation. For a long time, the West, led by the U.S., has overseen crisis after crisis. However, in spite of this fact, they have maintained their position as the leaders of the world. But, as Weaver (2015) reports, the 2008 financial crisis led to “widespread contemplation of the legitimacy, relevance, and effectiveness of the core ideas, rules, and structures that have governed the world economy over the past century.” What this statement means is that the leadership of the U.S. stood accused of failing to protect the world from the crisis. The events of the crisis helped to shed light on countries like China that were experiencing faster growth and that could challenge or offer alternatives to current global governance. However, questions have emerged over the implication of China’s emergence as a superpower. What does its rise mean to international stability, international organization, and global governance? Will the world conform to China’s wishes? Aside from the above questions, this article also seeks to shed light on the vulnerabilities that could impair China’s rise to power.
First of all, it is crucial to note that economic growth and world stability are intertwined. Straus-Khan (2009), the former managing director of the International Monetary Fund, said that the world’s stability or peace cannot exist without economic growth. Each component is crucial for the other’s existence. China’s rise is a testament to the above comments. Bader (2006) writes that China’s growth has led to an increase in trade with its East and Asian economies. This means that China’s growth has led to the consequential growth of its neighbors as well.
