According to the World Food Program's recent report, more than 43 million people face a severe food crisis (World Food Programme, 2022). The number has risen due to the pandemic (Wolfson & Leung, 2020). Indeed, this number is alarming, and necessary actions must be taken to help these people. The famine they experience is called 'food insecurity.' It is a situation where people lack access to enough food because they do not have enough money or other resources. Moreover, since people do not have access to food, their health is greatly affected too. Food insecurity has many causes, including climate change, poverty, racism, and cultural diversity. Cultural diversity happens when people have different views, values, beliefs, or races in society. Thus, cultural diversity correlates with food insecurity.
Food insecurity is a challenge faced by several people worldwide. Wolfson and Leung's (2020) article, Food insecurity and COVID-19: disparities in early effects for US adults, reveals that food insecurity affects people worldwide; specifically, it affects poor people and people of color. The pandemic has caused more people to have limited or no access to food. Many businesses have closed due to the pandemic, and people lost their jobs; as a result, these people have suffered greatly. They could not afford enough food before the pandemic, and now they cannot afford it anymore. Hence, food insecurity adversely affects health and the economy. Furthermore, in Pourmotabbed et al.'s (2020) article, Food insecurity and mental health: a systematic review and meta-analysis, they emphasize that aside from food insecurity's effect on physical health, it can also affect an individual's mental health. Food insecurity not only brings anemia, weight loss, cancer, or other physical comorbidities; it can also cause depression and anxiety. People should know that physical and mental health are equally important and strive to keep both aspects healthy. Thus, Pourmotabbed et al.
