Media Assignment Part 1

Purpose of the assignment
1. To identify current human rights issues that different groups are facing in Canada.
2. To reflect on how the media can contribute to the perpetuation of stereotypes and myths about diverse groups of people in society (directly or indirectly).
3. Understand the importance of effective online social activism for SSWs using social media, to demystify and counter stereotypes, stories, and myths.
Process of the assignment
For this assignment, you will create a scrapbook of three (3) Canadian news articles (written or visual) related to current human rights issues. These can include The Star, the Globe and Mail, Maclean’s Magazine, National Post, CBC, Canadian Dimension, Rabble.ca, etc.
You can choose from any relevant issues that affects oppressed populations such as indigenous people, refugees, women’s issues, the LGBTQ+ community, working class/poor people, seniors or youth and children, people with disabilities, or any other group that we have discussed in the course.
Format of the assignment:
1. Introduction to the assignment.
2. The issue: You will summarize the articles, highlighting the key aspect of the issue, the impact on the community or population affected by it and the solutions (if any) being presented in the article.
3. The content or message: Using the content in the course, you will provide an analysis/reflection on how the media has conveyed the information (are the voices of the oppressed/affected people included?), what might the root causes of the problem(s), and who benefits from these inequalities.
4. You will investigate if there is a group/coalition/agency who is working to support the group you have identified from the media articles. You will provide a description of the campaign and a concrete example of how you as an ally and an agent of change can play a role in supporting the campaign. These actions can include, signing a petition, writing/signing a letter to lobby politicians, engage in boycott, and disseminate information in your own social networks, etcetera.

Upon completing the above questions, the student(s) are expected to organize their answers into a word document for submission to the Media Assignment Part 1 folder in SLATE. This assignment should be at least two (2) page per article for a total of six pages, excluding the cover and reference page. The pages should be double-spaced, 12 point font, 1-inch margins on all sides, subheadings for major sections, proper paragraphs, no extra empty spaces between sections and paragraphs.

The student(s) can share their responses a video format. If working in a pair or trio, each individual video response should be no more than 5 minutes and combined group videos should be no more than 10 minutes.
Groups submitting a video response are encouraged to use the Bongo Video Assignment in SLATE to record, combine, organize and upload their video responses. Here is a helpful tutorial on how to create and combine videos using Bongo in the online Media Gallery and in the Virtual Assignment and Classroom spaces on SLATE. (Note: Students are welcomed to use other platforms to create and share their video responses. If using an alternative video sharing platform other than Bongo, students are encouraged to contact their professor about the specific mediums and platforms that will be accepted for their video submissions).

1. Whether you submit a written document or a video, you must incorporate content from the course.
2. In addition to the media articles you will be analyzing, you must provide at least three (3) more academic references using APA7 for a total of six (6) references. If you are submitting a video, you should include the references in the video or submit a reference page.
3. Any indication of plagiarism will be strongly penalized.
Students are not allowed to use advanced automated tools (artificial intelligence or machine learning tools such as ChatGPT) on assignments in this course. Each student is expected to complete assignments without substantive assistance from others, including automated tools.
