Careers in Kinesiology: A Detailed Discussion
Introduction
Kinesiology is a field of study that involves identifying, understanding, and observing the human body movement based on three scientific domains: mechanics, anatomy, and physiology (Hamilton, 2011). Kinesiology is a well-developed discipline in modern medical science, and studying this discipline will significantly assist in developing careers in medical science, nursing, sports, and others. The study of kinesiology offers a person career opportunities to become a personal trainer, exercise physiologist, strength and conditioning coach, dietician, or occupational therapist. The following discussion contains a detailed description of the three most successful career paths in the field of kinesiology, including required education level, job opportunities, and expected income.
Career as a Personal Trainer
The core job responsibility of a personal trainer is to demonstrate various physical exercises and train people on how to do these exercises to accomplish personal fitness and cardiovascular health. A personal trainer also teaches clients the correct use of fitness equipment and how to maintain it. Consistent monitoring of clients' fitness progress, advising them about appropriate diet and nutrition, and providing first aid in case of emergency are some responsibilities also included in a personal trainer's responsibilities (Editorial Team, 2019). The knowledge of mechanics and muscular movement via studying kinesiology provides a professional edge to a personal trainer over other competitors. Based on the client's fitness history and current fitness level, a personal trainer designs customized workout plans and, like general training, also meticulously monitors their client's fitness improvement (Jurakić & Bok, 2014). A personal trainer has to be mobile and active all the time since this job is mostly not linked with specific timing and one has to make errands to clients as per the time suitable to them.
Required Academic and Professional Education
For a start, a personal trainer can earn a high school diploma in kinesiology to embark on a career as a personal trainer. In this capacity, they can utilize their knowledge of muscular functions, dynamics and mechanics of body movement, and anatomy of muscles and bones to train their clients about maintaining a healthy body posture. However, an associate degree in a relevant field of kinesiologies, such as exercise sciences and exercise physiology, will significantly improve their resume and enhance their chances of career growth.
Job Opportunities
A personal trainer who has a primary kinesiology education can get employment in fitness training centers, gyms, and physiotherapy clinics. Besides, based on their skills and experience, personal trainers can also work as self-employed online or visiting fitness trainers (Editorial Team, 2019). They may also get employment in schools and colleges as physical education instructors (Staff, 2022).
