Amazon is one of the largest retailers in the world. The company has experienced tremendous growth over the years. Amazon boasts more than 150,000 employees. Managing such a large number of employees requires careful management and strict adherence to the values of the company. While Amazon keeps its internal processes a secret, there have been numerous complaints regarding its quality of management.
A major issue facing Amazon
Amazon has a problem in its management of employees. Over the years, the company has experienced a high rate of employee turnover. The failure to manage employees well has caused dissatisfaction among the staff members, causing many of them to leave the company. A special report from Payscale has placed the company second-highest in employee turnover rates among the Fortune 500 Companies. The median tenure for employees in Amazon is 1.0 years (Payscale, 2019). Such a high turnover rate has been critical for the downfall of the company.
How Amazon is underperforming in quality of management
Amazon has over the years demonstrated poor management. The high turnover rate demonstrates that the management does not treat the employees well (Al Mamun & Hasan, 2017). The failure to manage the employees well has adverse effects on the company. Firstly, it affects the launching of products. When top employees suddenly put a notice to quit in the middle of a product launch, the company is forced to delay the project (Johnson, 2018). Secondly replacing tech talent is costly to the company which increases its operating expenses. Thirdly, the high turnover rate tarnishes the reputation of the company. This means that some individuals may find it difficult to work with the company.
The relevance of organizational structure, design, and culture
The current organizational structure in Amazon is designed to push the limits of all the employees. The staff members appear as machines propelled to achieve the ever-expanding ambitions of the CEO, Jeff Bezos. Amazon applies the performance management approach. The method involves setting expectations and holding the workers accountable for their actions (Qamar & Asif, 2016). The company holds weekly reviews where each employee is measured using an array of metrics. The company also discourages lower-ranking employees from presenting their complaints. The authoritative nature of the management denies the staff members the opportunity to highlight their challenges directly to their superiors.
Principles and values of conscious culture and management
Amazon has failed to employ the principles and values of conscious culture and management. Little effort has been made to improve the management of the company. For instance, the company has continued to recruit employees on contract to deny them benefits like the medical cover. With the authoritarian approach to management, especially from Jeff Bezos, Amazon has not done much to improve its organizational function.
