Review Paper

Due the day of our Final Exam

Your task is to write a literature review on the topic of your choice.

Specifications:  5-6 pages (anything over is fine, but pretty please no more than 10). This page limit only includes the text of your paper, not the title page or references, an abstract isn’t necessary for a homework assignment.  You will need to find 5 strong peer-reviewed scientific sources.  Paper is 12 or 11 pt font with 1” margins.  Attempt APA style, you won’t be graded on your APA style….but attempt it, you will need to know it for nearly any science writing.  Here is a good website to help you learn it if you’ve never used it.  They have a visual example paper there as well so you can see the style.   (I will not accept the paper if you don’t attempt APA style)  http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/

The Paper:

For this paper I want you to review any topic in the Psychology of Human Sexuality that interests you.  You can literally pick anything you want to review as long as it’s related back to the science of studying Human Sexuality in some way. A review question for a smaller paper like this should focus on a narrow question of interest within a field.

Basic Format:

You can feel free to stray from this basic format, but this is just to help for people who may be lost in how to structure a research review paper.

Title page (no abstract needed)

Introduction – what is the question you are asking and what do you already know about it…or think you know about it?

The Body – take a paragraph or two to discuss each of your sources, and how they help to answer your research question separately

Nearing the conclusion – How does the research you found tie together to complement each other to answer your question.  Additionally, do the articles contradict each other at all?

Conclusion – what did you find, what questions do you still have that are left unanswered.  And what’s the next step you would take if you could ask another question on the topic

References – in APA style (like the rest of your paper. Use that online writing guide I link to above, its very easy to use and contains a sample paper)

The Psychology of Human Sexuality: Gender Ambiguity
Introduction
Efforts to demystify gender and gender identity involve their distinction from sex to a far more complicated breakdown of the two concepts based on biological and psychosocial factors. Gender refers to the perceptions of self or an individual based on the social, cultural, and psychological features that define masculinity or femininity CITATION Leh14 \l 1033 (Lehmiller, 2014). On the other hand, gender identity refers to the psychological perception of the self as being either male or female and thus belonging to either the masculine and feminine genders, respectively CITATION Leh14 \l 1033 (Lehmiller, 2014). However, it is important to note that one’s gender identity is not necessarily determined by their biological sex but is a function of biological and psychosocial factors. Biological influence on gender identity, such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) in women, may lead to the partial or complete development of masculine genitals even though their gonads are feminine CITATION Leh14 \l 1033 (Lehmiller, 2014). Psychosocial factors such as the environment, media, and cultural aspects such as cross-dressing also influence an individual's gender identity and sexuality. Such factors may, for instance, lead to an individual with male biological sex affiliating with feminine characteristics and behaviors. The outlined biological and psychosocial influences on gender identity and sexuality create an unclear distinction of gender orientation, also known as a gender ambiguity. The fact that gender ambiguity is a function of biological and psychosocial factors sets the premise for further research on the existing disparities in its tolerance across the social divide. What are the manifestations of these disparities on tolerance to gender disparity and their underlying factors contributing to the same? Provided herein is a comprehensive review of selected literature on gender ambiguity to identify the factors contributing to disparities intolerance to gender ambiguity and its manifestation across the social divide.
Literature Review
Gender ambiguity makes for one of the contentious issues in today’s society, with individuals across the social divide torn between accepting it as a naturally occurring phenomenon and refusing it as an unnatural occurrence. The controversies surrounding the parallel arguments often lack the backing of scientific facts to explain their tolerance or intolerance to individuals with ambiguous gender identities. Heather Looy’s article The Nature of Gender: Gender Identity in Persons who are Intersex or Transgendered engages both the psychological and theological perspectives to demystify gender ambiguity. The author invites theologians and the entire Christian fraternity to evaluate the underlying factors leading to ambiguous gender identification among members of society. Looy insinuates that the theology of gender is still lacking in its efforts to understand such individuals who end up being stigmatized or discriminated upon as deviants of the dichotomous norm CITATION Loo05 \l 1033 (Looy, 2005). She posits...
