Erikson’s fifth stage of psychological development is on identity vs. role confusion (Miller, Vandome, & John, 2011). The scene is between the ages of 12-18, the teenage age group. Children in this first stage struggle are to develop a sense of self. Adolescents tend to struggle in defining who they are and what their life is all about as their bodies undergo physical changes and emotional changes. Apart from these changes, the stage is predominated by exploration in defining one's roles and objectives. This stage determines what kind of person someone grows up to become.
The first outstanding characteristic of this stage is the physical changes that children undergo. The boys begin to have deep voices, growing of facial and pubic hairs. The girls start to develop breast, enlargement of hips, growing pubic hair and menstruation. These physical changes begin to make young adults more conscious of their sexuality (Coleman, 2011).
Secondly, the emotional changes experienced during this stage set the young adults in the path of self-discovery. Attraction to the opposite sex for both boys and girls is a common characteristic of this stage (Coleman, 2011). The feeling to look good around boys begins to manifest among young girls while the boys want to show the ladies how strong they are. Experimenting on sex is quite common, due to overwhelming of sexual hormones.
The predominant subject about this stage is establishing of one’s personality. Adolescent age is the ultimate decider of what kind of person one would become. Boys and girls tend to continually change their behavior until they find a particular personality that suits them. The confidence of a person is either built or destroyed based on how parents handle their children at this stage. Self-esteem issues confuse roles and loss of identity.
