How and Why the Psychology of Adjustment Classes Benefits Freshman in College
For this assignment, I interviewed Joan Nelson and Aretha Johnson regarding their view on adjustment classes. Nelson and Johnson are students at Prince George’s Community College.
In most cases, freshmen begin college with high expectations regarding college life even before they leave home. In various instances, some students aspire to go to college and are even eager to gain more freedom, as well as adventure. There are many others who are excited to join college initially, but they soon discover that college life falls short of their expectations. Many no longer feel happy, content, or secure in this new environment. Additionally, there are also those students who recognize that it is difficult for them to leave home and so they even dread the idea of packing for college. However, regardless of the expectations, almost all students face challenges and even obstacles that they did not expect as they begin college. It is important that colleges have a practical way of ensuring that freshmen can cope with their new life (Weiten, Dunn & Hammer, 2014). The psychology of adjustment classes include courses that focus on coping techniques that students would find very helpful. They act as a way for these new students to find a mechanism to adjust to new situations and challenges (Weiten, Dunn & Hammer, 2014). Various coping skills are learned in these classes and so freshmen get an opportunity to understand new ways of looking at life. In reality, psychology of adjustment classes provide an insight into the basic problem of normal adjustment. According to Weiten, Dunn and Hammer (2014), many people find it difficult to cope in new environments and circumstances. These people need to learn skills on how to handle the various challenges a new environment brings. In this way, psychology of adjustment classes benefit freshmen because they understand new ways of leaving behind the life they knew, and embrace the new college life. Ideally, psychology of adjustment classes puts more emphasis on the role of personality and the influence of one’s environment (Weiten, Dunn & Hammer, 2014). There are many things that freshmen encounter in college, which are both good and bad. For example, good things like making new friends, adventure, and learning new things entice many. However, there are also unfavorable things such as having difficulty in one’s subjects or being influenced into delinquent behavior such as drug use. Psychology of adjustment classes address these environmental factors and how one’s character, as well as personality can help in making the right choices (Weiten, Dunn & Hammer, 2014). In ...
