The aim of specializing in any field is to ensure that one gradually grasps the skills needed to be a fully-fledged professional in the same. Often are the times when the acquisition and mastery of such skills call for not only the time, but also determination and commitment of the individual pursuing it. This directly relates to the character of the person. Professional skills and the personality of an individual are aspects that gradually have to align over time, for one to fully realize his or her dream as an expert in any field. The personality of the person therefore, to a great extent, dictates the success of the person in such a field.
In my pursuit of skills in the field of I/O psychology, there have been plenty of things that I feel proud of. I can only relate them with the fact that my autobiography, which I had done earlier on, helped me in the realization of the fact that the character and personality growth of an individual is a crucial aspect of his or her maturity as a professional. When the two are in line or in-sync with the professional expectations, then acquisition and honing of the required skills becomes more like a practice session. They are therefore complementary.
I/O psychology is all about understanding the psychological wiring of all the partakers within a workplace environment. It highlights the mental and emotional connections and motivations behind the workings of the employees and the entire staff within the workplace. The function of I/O psychologists is to analyze the characteristics and behavior of the staff in the workplace. In order to do this, such psychologists have to utilize and incorporate a number of things, such as psychological principals as well as research methods. Additionally, they work to improve the state of the workplace environment by maximizing on the aspect of communication, safety and employee satisfaction, all which would improve performance.
I have learnt and realized quite a lot from studying ethics as an I/O psychologist-in-training. I/O psychology is a flexible field, outlining the behavioral characteristics of the employees within a workplace. As initially noted, it’s all about the workplace (APA, 2007). One of the biggest issues affecting the workplace has always been the ethical aspects or practices as per the general code of ethics and industry expectations. Organizations tend to find themselves on the wrong side of the ethical standards as a result of its employees being in repeated violations over the same. Even with the set code of ethics in each workplace, it is usually inevitable that some violations would be done.
