Research Paper on a Cognitive Approach for a Specific Issue or Population. Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

Research Paper Instructions:

ASSIGNMENT REQUIREMENTS:
Assignment 3: Research Paper on a Cognitive Approach for a Specific Issue or Population, 40% of the final grade
Option 1: Well-edited written literature review (8-10 pages of text)
Option 2: Well-edited oral presentation, with use of a visual to support your narrated presentation, i.e.. PowerPoint, Prezi, etc. (15-20 mins in length).
For this research paper or presentation, you will select
1) a specific cognitive approach (Dialectical behavior therapy)
2)apply it to a specific clinical issue or population (Multicultural groups, including people of a specific race or ethnicity)
3)and critically review evidence of effectiveness, limitations in the research, and applicability to people of diverse cultural groups.
For both options: Make sure to include all required elements located in the rubric and grading criteria below.
Section/Criterion
Points
Within the final, a description of the cognitive approach you have selected, a brief description of the problem or population under study, and the research question(s) guiding your paper.
2
Description of at least three techniques from this approach with your specific focus in mind. Imagine that your audience is comprised of clinical social workers who will want to know how to use these techniques, and describe them accordingly. Be sure to describe these techniques with your topic in mind.
6
Description of 3 empirical studies published since 2005 covering this cognitive approach with the population or problem under study, to include:

Brief description of each study. This should include a summary about sample size, demographics of the sample, where the study took place, presence of a control or comparison group, methods of measuring symptoms and symptom improvement, length of follow up (if applicable), and any other relevant information about the study.
2
· Evidence of effectiveness, and degree of effectiveness, or lack thereof. Be careful not to say merely that the method was effective or produced improvements. Also give information about degree of effectiveness, such as how big of a change occurred, or what proportion of people improved, etc. compared to other group studied.
6
· An examination of cultural factors. Are the studies you reviewed applicable to diverse cultural groups? Why or why not? How could this area of research be improved to be relevant to diverse cultural groups?
3
· Limitations of research in your chosen topic
3
· Summary of the above findings – what are the key takeaways from the research you have reviewed? Does the approach have evidence of effectiveness?
3
Clinical implications of the findings that you have uncovered and summarized. That is, based on your research, what information will help social workers improve their practice?
5
Depth of analysis and critical thinking (e.g., use of specific examples; application of knowledge from class; depth and breadth of presentation; analysis of research findings and limitations, beyond mere summary of works reviewed)
5
Writing quality and professionalism of presentation (e.g., use of APA style; lack of typographical errors; clear and logical presentation of ideas – see “Writing Tips” for more information)

Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) can be defined as a cognitive approach therapeutic in nature that helps people explore their thoughts and recognize they may cause self-destruction or harm. Human actions or behaviors are strongly associated with views; therefore, dialectical behavior therapy aims to influence negative thoughts to transform them into positive ones, consequently leading to a change in a specific behavior (Mercado & Hinojosa, 2017). The Latinos, also known as the Hispanic community, are the biggest ethnic group rapidly growing in the US. Latinos' drinking patterns have shown that the group has a large number of alcohol abusers who need help to recover from this addiction. Dialectical behavior therapy helps individuals recover from alcohol addiction or any other clinical issue by assisting addicted individuals in learning various skills such as emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance, and mindfulness. The approach focuses primarily on influencing the addict's behavior and surroundings to recover quickly. This study analyzes previous studies concerning the effectiveness of Dialectical behavior therapy for alcohol recovering addicts. The Hispanic community has many alcohol addicts who can promptly recover through the dialectical therapy approach.
There are several dialectical behavior therapy techniques that clinical social workers can implement to effectively alter the behavior of alcohol addicts in the recovery process. These techniques are used depending on the client's problems, the particular client involved, and the client's capability to utilize any of them. The first technique consists of the incorporation of core mindfulness. The mindfulness concept is the ability of an individual to give their full attention to the things happening without being judgmental and living at that moment. This helps individuals recover objectively interpret and review current events and is essential in assisting them in suspending their biases and expectations and living freely. The second technique is distress tolerance, which is a skill that allows an individual to adopt and accept their current life situation and their self. This will enable individuals to cope with intense emotions with a positive outlook. The last technique is emotional regulation, which involves personal identification, reducing an individual's vulnerability to indulging in reactive behavior such as alcohol abuse, mindfulness increasing, recognizing hindrances to behavior change, stress management application, and taking opposite actions (Maffei, Cavicchioli, Movalli, Cavallaro & Fossati, 2018). Emotional regulation helps an individual effectively navigate strong emotions, thus minimizing emotional vulnerability.
Problem Statement
Alcohol-related problems and alcoholism among Latinos have become a severe problem that keeps increasing despite the ethnic and country variations, among other variables. Alcohol addiction affects many Latinos due to various reasons that contribute to their increased drinking behavior (Castañeda et al., 2019). Increased alcohol abuse can be ...
