Migraines and PTSD
In light of the impacts of devastation such as natural disaster, the victims are left with scars for the rest of their lives. The devastation comes in a range of elements among them, economic, health and social impacts. Of importance in this paper are the impacts that are associated with the health of the victims. Specifically, the element of developing migraines as a result of PTSD that comes from having gone through a natural disaster such as a hurricane (Arcaya et al., 2017).
For instance, when the hurricane Katrina hit, the impacts were devastating even for those who were watching on television. For the victims that were experiencing the ordeal, this was a tough time in their lives. They had to deal with the fact that, their lives had simply changed forever. Some of them lost their life savings, loved ones and investments to the hurricane; others were admitted to hospital having encountered injuries on their bodies. The most important of the lot relative to the objectives of the paper are the health implications comparative to long-term effects (Arcaya et al., 2017). To better establish the health concerns associated with natural disasters and how they relate to PTSD and migraines, this paper looks into the journal article; Association of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms with Migraine and Headache after a Natural Disaster, which was done by Arcaya, Asad, Waters, Lowe, Subramanian and Rhodes in 2011. For some of the victims in the events of the hurricane, this left them psychologically scarred such that they tend to have migraines once in a while. It is for this reason that the research paper tries to establish the relationship between the events of natural disaster, the PTSD elements associate with the psychological impacts on the body and more importantly, whether the events have a way of triggering migraines in the victims. The focus on the victims is further narrowed to include a majority of the participants as being women. Previsions research has been seen to link the element of developing migraines and having PTSD from an occurrence such as a hurricane. It is also important to note that the research in consideration in this paper had a bias on the women being African American and having come from a low income homestead. The African American population that was under consideration composed of 85.1% of the entire population that was considered for the research. At the same time the general age was an average of 25.2 years (Arcaya et al., 2017).
Victims of a hurricane such as the hurricane Katrina experience a significant ordeal of psychological impacts that tends to affect their daily lives. One of the elements in considering for the paper is the migraines that are associated with the PTSD (Arcaya et al., 2017). The migraines are likely to develop every time the person in question is reminded of the events that took place during the natural disaster. It is also common where the victims experience some element of difficulty in their lives; they are likely to have migraines that are directed towards the feeling of loss and bereavement. This is given the social, economic and financial losses some of the victims experience.
