Anxiety is a common disorder among college students. They exhibit various anxiety disorders, including and not limited to panic attacks and generalized anxiety disorders. However, the severity of anxiety is averagely equal despite the difference in the spiking conditions. Asian college students have exhibited anxiety disorders though not too extreme levels. Eventually, they are the less likely ethnic group to be impacted by the disorder in the United States. While the community having the least population in the country may be an explanation for the minimal occurrences, it is noted that there are various factors relating to the low prevalence of the problem besides the number of people in the ethnic group. For instance, they have the highest household income, and the income level might have a close association with anxiety disorders. Therefore, though Asian college students may not have high anxiety disorders, the population still reports substantial rates of people dealing with the mental problem, based on its association with issues such as racial discrimination and coping with the new college environment.
Having the primary idea in college as exploring new and exciting ideas, and innovative stage of life could explain the prevalence of anxiety among college students. In addition, groups like Asian Americans enter into a debatable brain phase considering their expected interaction with many people from different backgrounds. According to Hampole, Nguyen, & Woodhead (2019), the severe implications of anxiety occur during the first and second semesters, where the students are still coping with the college surrounding. This period is characterized by various issues, like exploring what they will engage in for the next couple of years. Hampole, Nguyen, & Woodhead (2019) argue that the idea of separating them from their traditional and family system could impact generalized anxiety disorders among students in knowing they must adopt the colleges’ environment beliefs. Staying away from home is not always easy, not to mention the idea of aspects such as living with roommates who may be originating from other ethnicities. Thus, it is not a surprise that significant levels of anxiety spike among college students. While getting to the college level is probably every teenager’s dream, the close encounters in the environment can potentially affect the students’ mental health, resulting in anxiety disorders.
Asian college students may not have high anxiety like the other ethnic groups in their schooling environments. However, they are still impacted by mental health issues during the adaptation process to the new environment. For instance, these students have to grow to significant responsible levels since they do not have anyone taking care of them in college (Hampole, Nguyen, & Woodhead, 2019). Besides, getting to colleges comes with a bunch of adult responsibilities that may be overwhelming. While some students can sufficiently cope with the new life without significant challenges, others find the idea entirely difficult considering the ultimate entering into a new life with intense demands. Thus, they consistently worry about the new level of experience and studies. Notably, Hampole, Nguyen, & Woodhead (2019) reveal that Asian college students are not likely to report their mental health issues to the staff. The few impacted individuals in the ethnic group show severe implications because they cannot share the problems bound to affect their mental health negatively. It is essential to know why Asian college students affected by anxiety disorders may endure severe implications than the other ethnic groups in the community.
Research by Cheng, Lee & Iwamoto (2012) shows that Asian Americans do not engage in intense drinking than other ethnic groups such as African Americans, and the behavior could significantly explain the low prevalence of anxiety in the population. However, some of the students engaging in the activity reveal severe implications. The mere people caught in alcohol use end in severe consequences like depression and suicidal actions Cheng, Lee & Iwamoto (2012). Thus, heavy drinking in the population yields significant detrimental effects among the affected individuals. While the Asians engaged in heavy drinking may be few, the severity of the issue is impacted by high rates of depression, affecting most of the people in alcohol use in the population.
There is a variation in the implications of heavy drinking between males and females in the Asian population. Cheng, Lee & Iwamoto (2012) claim that alcohol use affects the communities’ mental health differently. For instance, heavy drinkers ought to experience high levels of detrimental effects than light drinkers. Cheng, Lee & Iwamoto (2012), female heavy drinkers have poor mental health than light drinkers, non-drinkers, and heavy male drinkers. In this case, females are likely to have severe implications.
