As companies go international, they have to operate in different cultures with many languages. Succeeding in the global market requires companies to train its employee on relevant matters that can elevate their communication with colleagues and customers in their respective countries. It is essential that employees learn and understand the religion, education, government systems, and way of life in the local country (Noe, 2020). Such an understanding is crucial in building relationships and trust with local partners and customers, which is integral for the success of the business. In essence, training methods that help employees communicate and relate better with the local people are essential. As such, a combination of role plays, behavior modeling, and team training would be the best methods that an organization can use for language training and cultural knowledge and appreciation.
Role plays are one of the methods that can be useful in helping employees in language training and cultural knowledge and appreciation. As Noe (2020) informed, role plays are characterized by trainees taking roles as a client, a manager, or a discontented employee and exploring what the role entails. Furthermore, the author points out that role-plays are often part of programs that encompass interpersonal skills like coaching, provision of feedback, communication, and leadership (Noe, 2020). In a new market with different culture and language, these skills are vital to ensure cohesion in the workplace as well as good relationships with clients and other partners. With role plays, participants can practice different roles that are common in the local market, such as that of a customer communicating in the local language. An essential part of role play is a script providing the details and expectations of each role (Noe, 2020). With a script that mimics the scenarios in the local market, trainees can gain valuable skills that can make their work effective. Role plays give employees the opportunity to practice local culture and important linguistic cues that can boost their communication. In addition, role playing can help employees understand the perspectives of other cultures, which can help in cultural appreciation.
