As a nurse, you can have a great impact on the success or failure of the adoption of EHRs. It is important for nurses to understand their role as change agents and the ways they can influence others when addressing the challenges of changing to a drastically different way of doing things.


Everett Rogers, a pioneer in the field of the diffusion of innovations, identified five qualities that determine individual attitudes towards adopting new technology (2003). He theorized that individuals are concerned with:



  • Relative advantage: The individual adopting the new innovation must see how it will be an improvement over the old way of doing things.

  • Compatibility with existing values and practices: The adopter must understand how the new innovation aligns with current practices.

  • Simplicity: The adopter must believe he or she can easily master the new technology; the more difficult learning the new system appears, the greater the resistance that will occur.

  • Trialability: The adopter should have the opportunity to “play around’ with the new technology and explore its capabilities.

  • Observable results: The adopter must have evidence that the proposed innovation has been successful in other situations.

For this Assignment, you assume the role of a nurse facilitator in a small hospital in upstate New York. You have been part of a team preparing for the implementation of a new electronic health records system. Decisions as to the program that will be used have been finalized, and you are now tasked with preparing the nurses for the new system. There has been an undercurrent of resistance expressed by nurses, and you must respond to their concerns. You have a meeting scheduled with the nurses 1 week prior to the training on the new EHR system. Consider how you can use the five qualities outlined by Rogers (2003) to assist in preparing the nurses for the upcoming implementation.

Introduction
Providing the best quality of healthcare for patients requires any healthcare professional to be able to adopt new techniques, methodologies, and innovations for the betterment of the whole healthcare process (Patmon, Gee, Rylee, & Readdy, 2016). Nurses, being one of them, are at the forefront of these innovations, which then requires them to be more flexible for such uses. However, adopting new technologies is not an easy process. It requires a great deal of openness and determination for individuals to adapt and learn how to utilize them fully. In line with this, this article would try to find a strategic action plan that would allow a new technology (EHR – Electronic Health Record) to be adopted by nurses working in a small hospital in upstate New York.
Action Plan
As stated earlier, one of the main reasons that hinder the adaptation of new technologies is the lack of openness and determination in the part of the employees, in learning about such a methodology. However, in order to address this, the technology itself (and its presentation) must also be enticing for these healthcare professionals. In a book written by Rogers (2003), he identified five things that helps identifies an individual’s attitude towards new technology. Namely, these five (5) are (1) relative advantage, (2) compatibility with existing values and practices, (3) simplicity, (4) trialability, and (5) observable results. These four, when done and ensured effectively could help in the overall adoption of individuals of new technologies.
In order to make nurses adopt the new form of an electronic health record, its relative advantage must be made aware to them. In a study conducted by Goldstein et al., (2017), they found out that adoption of new EHRs could better clinical practices by improving clinical risks predictions, security, and data management, among others. Additionally, this could also improve patient management and even queuing lines, through automation of clinical and other administrative processes. These should be emphasized to the nurses when presenting the new system.
Another factor that helps increase the staff’s acceptance of such technology is ‘compatibility with existing values and practices.’ This is important because technologies that overhaul the whole system would disrupt not only present practices but also be cumbersome to learn.
